60 Minutes Adds Diversity

2012 is starting off on a diverse note for the CBS staple 60 Minutes.

Veteran CBS news correspondent Alison Stewart will become one of the first African-American women to appear as a "segment host".

The late Ed Bradley and current correspondent Byron Pitts have been in the role as interviewer but I haven't seen a female of color in that same role until now.

But rest assured that her race and gender take a back seat to her natural talent as a journalist.

The CNN Legacy of TJ Holmes

Starting New Year's Day, CNN's newsroom is going to be missing a key anchor.

TJ Holmes is headed to BET, according to a statement issued by the station.

Since October 2006, the 34 year old popular anchor had become a favorite with women (and some men) for his looks, deep voice, and cool appeal.

But he wasn't well liked by some journalists. Folks that I've spoken with privately have complained about his lack of journalistic credibility. They felt that too much attention was paid to the superficial aspects of Mr. Holmes and not whether he could report the news properly.

TV news is a tough business. You could be the perfect anchor and still get criticized. Some criticism is race-related, while other cheap shots could be due to feelings of jealousy.

In fact, I have been disheartened about how looks have become more important than the ability to genuinely connect with people. Journalism started in a "journal" and not on TV. While TV is a great tool to promote good storytelling, presentation is only half the battle. If you really don't respect the tedious process of production--which includes countless hours of research and being rejected for interview requests--then you might not be in the business for the right reason.

I feel that TJ Holmes could have done better at CNN. But it wasn't his fault. Once he fell into the role of the Saturday and Sunday morning heartthrob, he couldn't break out of it. While he might have had some panties thrown at the TV screen, he never got a chance to differentiate his charismatic and professional sides.

Hopefully, BET will give him the opportunity to become the next "Ed Gordon." (Ed Gordon has been BET's on and off again journalism mainstay.)

But if he thought he got confused with Don Lemon at CNN, just wait until folks start calling him Emmett Miller (below).

He'd better go over to MSNBC--where there's no chance in hell he'd be confused with Al Sharpton.

CNN's Layoffs and Playoffs

This week, CNN has had a hard time telling the difference between two unlike objects.

On a light note, Don Lemon and TJ Holmes appeared in the clip below to prove to people that they are not the same person. If people can't tell the difference between a 34 year old with a baritone voice and buzz cut like Holmes and a 45 year old with a slightly higher voice, smaller nose, and medium length afro like Lemon, then you can tell them anything and they'll believe it.

Yet, the comparison "game" had a different outcome when CNN laid off 50 staffers--including a dozen photojournalists. According to reports, the network feels that the availability of citizen journalists led to this cost-cutting move. It goes back to the old saying: Why buy the cow if you can get the milk for free.

As a current CNN iReporter, I appreciate the platform that they have given me. But I would never try to move forward at the expense of others. We need to train professional journalists how to think like iReporters and vice versa. The pros and the amateurs can work together instead of against one another.

In my opinion, the layoffs are a much bigger issue than playing two black men off one another. The network just got less diverse with a loss of 50 employees and having Lemon and Holmes joke about their not-so-similar appearances doesn't make anything better.

Jennifer Hudson's New Image

Jennifer Hudson is sassy--with a purpose.

Usually, women have to subdue their emotions at risk of being perceived as angry. But the future Mrs. Otunga wants people to know that she is still from the South Side of Chicago and will not tolerate disrespect.

Some PR folks would cringe at her no-nonsense approach to detractors, but I think it's a good thing. While I don't condone her cursing out folks on Twitter, I do think she needs to make it clear that "familiarity breeds contempt." People should not talk to celebrities (or anyone) however they want and expect no consequences.

Respect is a two-way street--not a cul de sac.

She looks great on the December 2011/January 2012 cover of EBONY magazine.

According to RollingOut's Kathleen Cross, Hudson opens up about her relationship with former reality show star/attorney-turned wrestler David Otunga and addresses a controversy about comments she never made.

The new issue hits stands on November 29.

Art Imitates Fashion

The names of his paintings bring him just as much attention as the artwork he creates.

"Gucci Buddha", "Polo Christ", and "Kali Vuitton" add to the mystique of the latest art exhibition of this New York-born but Chicago-based artist who goes by the name of P. Scott.

His art is quickly creating buzz throughout the Chicago area, so you definitely want to view it while you can.
Scott is holding the last of three exhibitions next Monday, November 21, 2011 at the Lacuna Artists Lofts & Studios (2150 S. Canalport, Ste. 5C-14) from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the city's Pilsen neighborhood.

The exhibit and reception, "Vision of A Fashion God", is hosted by Scott and the Amber Factor Elite. It was been held twice in the past month (October 21 and November 4) and it was well-received both times.

He's looking to make the third and final event just as memorable.

I had to opportunity to ask him a few questions about what makes him stand out and why this exhibit is so important.

Who or what inspired you to become an artist?

I believe being around a very artistic and creative family inspired me. My mother, father and grandmother have always been into art and fashion so it was just natural for me to follow suit. I also did have a visual art teacher Susan Medler that inspired me tremendously. I appreciate her and my family for helping me find my artistic path and really believe in my talent.

Do you ever have moments where you don't feel like doing art?

Yes! If I'm not there mentally I am not at all inspired to do anything artistic because I am so passionate and tend to be very critical of myself and my art. I can not create anything when the passion is not present. Passion drives me to express my full creative self. Passion is necessary for me to create my best work.

Why aren't there more kids trying to be artists?

Interesting question and a good question. I think it may be because it is a known fact that we all are born artist and we are taught with time to drift away from that natural artist within. Because of that we are taught to read and write. So if you think about writing instead of drawing pictures which was natural for all of us at an early age we eventually want to make sense and conform to the standard way of communicating and expressing ourselves....writing! That is why more kids are not artist. But for a true artist we are NEVER convinced of this and will forever continue to do what is natural and express through art.

Do you feel that Chicago's art scene is better than New York?

I would not say the art scene is better in Chicago as opposed to New York. I would say they both have their pros and cons. Chicago is less saturated and in New York everybody feels as though they an artist to some extent so it can seem over saturated. I think as an artist you can be more respected because of that, people take the time to give the work an honest look not just skimming over it. As far as notoriety I think you gain more in New York if you can get the necessary attention because of the world class galleries and museums. But over all the two are still very similar scenes in terms of art and artist.

What can people look forward to with this exhibit?

What you can expect from this exhibit Vision of a Fashion God is that it is very provocative and thought provoking it pushes the boundaries of religion and materialism and takes a look at the paradox between the two. For me it is an expression of the complexity and the issues of a very materialistic and capitalistic society that we live in today. It highlights the struggle in which we all face with trying to balance materialism and religion. That is the concept but as far as the art and style of it I strived to be creative and unique. Combine art with fashion merging the two worlds by painting on exotic fabrics like leather, cotton, linen, denim along with other assorted fibers to name a few. Also referencing fashion through subject matter. I want the viewer to recognize P.Scott and my work as though it sincerely represents art fused with fashion...a true marriage between the two. This is what I embody; I, P. Scott, love fashion; I, P. Scott, am art!

If you could present at any museum in the world, where would it be?

The MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York City and the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.

Who do you feel is a younger contemporary of yourself?

This is the one question I can't really answer. I am still getting my feet wet as a professional artist and building my career. I enjoy speaking to art students by encouraging them to pursue their passion and work on their craft. It is my goal to work with art students and teach them. Maybe then I will find that student I can mentor.

One of my mentors is visual artist Hebru Brantley from Chicago and he is a bit younger than me. So you never really know the younger artists can become teachers to older artists.

What are your goals for 2012?
My goals are to paint an empire! My focus is to really to show my work as much as possible. I still have the graffiti artist within which compels me to "get up" or get exposure so to say. So expect to see at least 3 more exhibitions in 2012 and a lot more of P.Scott. To also build my name or brand awareness and to be recognized as the artist who truly represents art fused with fashion.

An Unusual Publicist

TMZ needs a publicist, alright.

The question is whether they have hired the right person for the job.

Today, the "news" organization made an awfully insensitive and pathetic attempt at being funny in calling Lindsay Lohan one of Heavy D's "morgue buddies." (Lohan is working at the facility where Heavy D's body is.)

Well, Ms. DC Livers of Black Press Radio tried to contact TMZ's publicist Casey Culver.

Casey Culver must've skipped the class on media relations and public affairs. [I thought they offered those courses at online universities.] Obviously, they don't because she has been very crude with callers who want the insensitive blog taken down.

I don't even wanna give more press to her. But word travels quickly in the media industry and some publicists and journalists I know have already blacklisted TMZ.

It's not that TMZ goes the traditional, respectable route to begin with. But a lot of journalists give attribution to TMZ for their "breaking news."

I won't be one of them anymore.

Do We Need 1 Hr Evening News?

ABC 7 Chicago (WLS-TV) is making big moves this evening.

The Sunday news at 10 p.m. will be expanded to 1 HOUR. The longer broadcast is expected to help solidify the station's #1 ranking and its brand identity.

I'm just not sure if there needs to be that much WEEKEND news.

Weekend news tends to be slow, given that government offices are closed and most folks are out doing anything but trying to make news.

It would be okay if they expanded it on Friday evenings or during breaking news. They could have even tried a "Midnight Update" to see if the audience was interested in more news.

But if the local news market is going to just tell the same stories over and over again--viewers are going to only watch for the first 30 minutes anyway.

I hope that everything works out for Channel 7.

I will be watching. I just don't know for how long.

STOP THE INSANITY!

Doing the same thing expecting a different result each time is INSANITY.

In PR, a client must learn how to be consistent without being predictable. And that is much easier said than done. However, if a publicist knows what he or she is doing--that goal should be attained with a few drops of sweat and some much needed criticism.

If you want to get ahead in life: START MOVING!

Stop being complacent with just making $30,000 a year, hanging out with the same people and complaining about the same things. Use this first day of a new month to make it a great one!

Insanity is not just the name of a popular workout DVD. Instead, it is a word that relates to a regressive mindset that can keep folks stuck in a rut. So, start trying to do NEW THINGS.

In Living Color Makes A Comeback

The popular sketch comedy from the 1990s, "In Living Color" is coming back for two episodes to celebrate Fox's 25th anniversary in 2012.

It was announced recently that Keenen Ivory Wayans--the show's co-creator/executive producer--will return to his hosting duties for the special shows.

I have fond memories of watching the show as a young kid. I remember when it changed from weekends to weeknights and all of the music video parodies. One of my favorite sketches was the singing duo called "Cephus and Reesie" that was apparently based on Ashford and Simpson.

I'm just not sure if that kind of show can work some 20 years later.

Fox just had a bad experience with Affion Crockett's "In The Flow". To add to that, fans would probably benefit more from a MAD TV reunion than from a show that predated the iPod generation.

We shall see.

It is gonna take one heck of a PR campaign with my generation (25 to 45) to get us sold on the idea of reviving the show.

Consider The Source

Singer Adele does not have throat cancer.

But folks are instantly repeating--or "retweeting"-- what they have seen on Twitter.

It seems like Twitter has become a mixed blessing for the journalism business. On one hand, it is a fast and cost effective way to spread information quickly to a targeted audience. On the other, it is a grab bag of unfiltered information--some true, some false.

Without an official filter, false statements can appear true and true statements can appear false.

That is why one must "consider the source."

Anyone who is not a professional journalist, a public relations rep/spokesperson for the individual in question, or a close friend should NEVER be considered a reputable source.

Somebody who is @(Insert obnoxious name here) should not be taken seriously as the aforementioned parties.

The strongest source will always be the Associated Press. (@AP)

All other news organizations will usually base their reports off the AP or an official source within the public figure's camp.

Building My Twitter Presence

I am up early trying to change my life.

For months, I have made excuses about my lack of Twitter engagement. But now, I am ready to have fun while sharpening what is now a much needed professional skill.

The first thing I've started to do is BE STRATEGIC in choosing who to follow.

1. Find folks with common interests
-If you're interested in junk food and they like to eat healthy, you are not going to interact much.

2. Find folks who follow less than 250 people
You have a greater chance of being noticed in their timeline.

3. Post frequently
Use applications like HootSuite to schedule your posts for time release. So, even when you're not online, you can post links or special announcements that will be seen at a predetermined time.

The next thing I've started to do is SET A GOAL.

This week, I want to gain at least 25 new followers.

I will keep you posted on whether this new strategy works.

60 Minutes Remembers Steve Jobs

Even in death, Steve Jobs still remains a trend setter.

Tonight, his biographer Walter Isaacson was featured in a profile story on "60 Minutes" to promote the release of the long awaited book tomorrow.

Isaacson made some shocking revelations in tonight's interview with Steve Kroft. One was that Jobs was mean to folks at times; Another, Jobs didn't always have a relationship with his oldest daughter.

Just 3 weeks ago, the world was mourning the loss of a visionary. But the biography could bring out secrets darker than the turtlenecks that Jobs was known for wearing.

It's almost a sense of posthumous PR.

In Julius Caesar's eulogy, it was stated that: "the evil that men do lives after them, the good is oft interred with their bones."

That might not apply in this situation.

As I type this blog from my 2005 iMac--which still works great-- I see the good that Jobs did right in front of my eyes.

Radio Host Fired After Shocking Revelation

Lisa Simeone got fired by a company that she doesn't even work for.

How in the world did that happen?

Well, it was revealed that Ms. Simeone was participating in an event for the "October 2011 Movement"--which has been compared to the Occupy Wall Street movement.

On Wednesday, she was terminated as host of "Soundprint"--a show that is distributed (but not produced) by NPR. However, the "indirect" association was enough for her to be removed.

As a journalist, I have realized that I can't be an activist. It will compromise my storytelling. So, I must "stay out of it."

But I wish Ms. Simeone well.

Signs You Should Ditch The Publicist

Some journalists think of public relations as the "dark side" of communications.

By their assessment, PR folks get paid just to pitch stories whereas journalists have to find ways to sell stories to their respective audiences.

Most PR reps/publicists charge $100 and up to distribute press releases--without actual coverage being guaranteed. What some of them can be accused of doing is make clients pay for the possibility of exposure instead of obtaining the press clipping. But that doesn't mean that all publicists and practitioners in PR are bad people. It just means that clients need to be aware of who they are dealing with before wasting their money.
SIGN 1: They Don't Have A Web Presence

You probably thought I would focus on the publicist getting YOU coverage first.

Nope!

When I first started doing PR about three years ago, my first client was myself. I became the "guinea pig" for which kinds of pitches worked and which ones failed epically. Now, I have the art of pitching down to a science because I understand how news judgment is just as relevant to PR as it is to journalism.

Don't do business with a publicist who is afraid to be searched on Google.

SIGN 2: They Don't Have Any Specific Goals

Marketing 101 deals with selecting a target audience and knowing the difference between objectives, strategies, and tactics.

Sending a press release is a TACTIC and not a GOAL! (Objective)

Instead, a good PR person would choose a target of maybe 20,000 people to contact and hopefully 1,000 or 2,000 people who will follow through and use the product or service.

SIGN 3: You're Not Getting Anything Out Of It

If you are paying hundreds of dollars for service and not getting any return on your investment, you might need to find another publicist.

After School Matters PR Crisis

Could Chicago become the American home of sweatshop labor?

While I personally feel that unpaid internships are the most egregious form of labor, it is only a half-step below making teens work for $1.00 an hour.

According to WBEZ's Linda Lutton, After School Matters--an enrichment program that gives teens stipends-- is expected to drop wages from the $5/hour mark in 2009 to about $1.10/hour.

Some say that jobs keep violence down.

But I partially disagree.

Parental involvement, community support, and keeping kids busy is what keeps violence down. A job is a job. But self respect comes from having a relationship with your parents and mentors.

I see kids drumming on cans at the intersection all the time. They didn't use the job market as an excuse to start sticking up people. Instead, they decided to try to earn an honest living.

AFTER SCHOOL MATTERS....

PAY THESE KIDS WHAT THEY ARE WORTH!!!!!! STOP IT!!!!!!

J Cole's Image Controversy

A couple days ago, I was in Bible Study and somehow J.Cole became the topic instead of J-E-S-U-S.

The person who brought up J.Cole spoke of how its ironic that the rapper brags about all the girls he can be with now that he's famous. That same person grew up with one of those young ladies who J.Cole makes references to sleeping with in his album lyrics.

But I'm not one to gossip.

Instead, I want to talk about how folks are saying that J.Cole is saving Hip Hop. Just last year, another rapper--Drake--was subject of the same talk. It seems like when anybody pursues a more R&B friendly style of Hip Hop, they are given this special status.

Don't get me wrong. The guy is talented. Check out Exhibit A below:

It's just that it's too early to say that he's that good.

If he can overcome the sophomore album curse, then he should be fine. But he's still defining himself as a rapper. He can't be too socially conscious because he won't get airplay on the radio. By the same token, he doesn't want to use the B-word too much because he'll be no different than the "hood stars" who rap about the negative aspects of black life.

I prefer him to be a socially conscious rapper who doesn't brag as much.

Maybe it's a sign of insecurity. Maybe it's just his rap persona.

Whatever it is, he needs to find some clarity quickly before he becomes the flavor of the month.

PR Mogul Salutes Steve Jobs

Devin James is one of the many young entrepreneurs who inspire me.

Just like Mike Belgrove and Juan Perez of Highbrid Nation, he is an African-American male under the age of 35 who is defying the odds. As the owner and founder of The Devin James Group, he is truly the definition of a PR mogul.

All of the men referenced above started a business with very little money, no audience, no clients, but had a big dream. Back in June, I decided to do the same by starting 2City Media. I can't afford a website just yet, but my online show that is produced by 2City Media called 2CN (2City News) is making big moves.

Devin James talks about someone who inspired him in this video--Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who passed away on Wednesday at age 56.

It's a heartfelt tribute to a man who touched us all with empire built on little i's and big Yous. :)

Steve Jobs will be missed.

Blogger Schools Governor on Culture

Somebody in the Governor's office thought it would be a good idea to post this picture.

Just in case you can't see it, I'll describe it to you. The picture is on a flyer promoting food on sale for Hispanic Heritage Month.

The man is the picture appears to be a stereotypical caricature of a Mexican man with a sombrero selling food items on a cardboard tent sign. It seems as if the same person who designed the flyer didn't take time to ask co-workers if that were a good idea.

Well, ChicagoNow blogger Christina Rodriguez--who normally blogs about diabetes--decided to set the record straight about the offensive flyer and a few other things.

Chicago's Hidden Senior Community

Don't let the statistics fool you.

Black folks in Chicago can live past the expectancy rates. In fact, one of my dear family friends and former church members turns a big age today: 109!

Mrs. Rosa Lee Gibbs was born in Mississippi on October 5, 1902. She moved to Chicago to live with her daughter in the early 1980s after her husband, Mr. Gibbs, passed away. And she is one of the most loving people I have ever met.

She might not be the city's oldest resident, but she's close.

Just 2 months ago, Mrs. Ethel Darden passed away at the age of 111. But it's not easy to find records of the next oldest Chicagoan. So, let's just say Mrs. Gibbs is the oldest person on the Far South Side.

I hope to find more folks in our city over the age of 100. They can serve as a true inspiration for folks who feel that life can be rough at times.

An Ironic Talk Show Appearance

Movie legend Jenifer Lewis (What's Love Got To Do With It?) was on the Chicago talk show "Windy City Live" today promoting her role on NBC's "Playboy Club" at 9:30 A.M. Central Time.

Just a few hours later, word spread that the show had been canceled .

So much for promotion.

It makes me wonder if folks at NBC already knew but just didn't want to upset Ms. Lewis.

In addition to that, I found it odd that a Disney-owned ABC affiliate would be promoting a Comcast-owned NBC show.

"The Playboy Club" brought a good deal of revenue and jobs to the city of Chicago, so this is definitely disappointing news.

However, period dramas rarely work in multiple quantities.

Most folks think that "Mad Men" is enough nostalgia for one time period.

More Drama, Less Talk For Anderson

It seems like Anderson Cooper's talk show needs to go back to the drawing board.

Over the weekend, it was discovered that a teenager scheduled to appear on the show had injured himself filming a stunt. While the show's producers attest that they are not at fault, it is alleged that they encouraged him to do something like that. And if this turns out to be a ploy for ratings, the show could be headed towards the cutting room floor.

I'm not trying to put Anderson down. He's a wonderful journalist. I'm sure that his talk show production team is equally efficient as well. Unfortunately, it seems like this show wasn't thought out enough. You almost need to be on another talk show FIRST to realize what it takes to have your own.

Steve Wilkos started on the "Jerry Springer Show" before he had his own platform.
Jimmy Kimmel was on "The Man Show" before becoming the Prince of Late-Late Night Television.
The list goes on and on. (Actually, it doesn't)

But Anderson needs to realize that it takes a SPECIAL person to succeed at daytime talk. This is not something that just anybody can do.

Look at Rosie O'Donnell. She's had more than one attempt at a talk show. There's nothing wrong with that.

Maybe Anderson needs to repackage and try something different.

Just no more stunts...

October Is Breast Cancer Month

Yesterday was the first day of October--Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Ironically, I attended the funeral of a friend's mother who passed away of the disease.

Earlier this morning, a family friend --who was 91 years old and a 32 year survivor of breast cancer--passed away of bone cancer just 3 months after being diagnosed with it.

This is the perfect time to use public relations to improve human relations. We must be aware of what is going on so that we can change things.

Amani's TV Job Tips

Tyrese Takes A Stand

On the latest episode of "When Keeping It Real...Goes Wrong"...

Singer/actor Tyrese Gibson can add another title in front of his name: activist.

He recently spoke out against a liquor store during a radio interview on a KISS 101.7 in Delaware and what happened next will surprise you:

He was asked to leave the station!

My friends at RollingOut have the scoop.

And it's not over yet. Twitter is now abuzz with folks planning to boycott the station. What started as a bad dream is becoming a recurring nightmare for management.

The radio station owner, Tony Q, just posted a different account on the station's Facebook page:

Tyress I have heard enough of your lies. I am the Owner & General Manager of the station that "kicked" you off the air. Now you know full well what the reason was. In case you forgot I will remind you.
When you came into the station I was informed by my staff that you were not in a good mood. You went on the air and said that you wanted to stop and get a Pepsi and a candy bar. I am surprised that... you couldn't tell the difference between a convenience store and a liquor store. You preceded to lecture to the audience that they had to do something about this. That liquor stores should not be near schools. This I do not disagree with but in case you don't know, liquor stores as well as schools are controlled by the state. This is part that upset me. It was they way you spoke on the air. You stereotyped your own culture by calling them Homies ect. Almost blaming Delawareans for allowing liquor stores to be there. The DJ on the air said to you that this is not the only station that has this problem, your reply was I don't care I am here now in Delaware.
As far as I know there are no liquor stores located across the street from a school. I have it all on tape, if you need to be refreshed. What got me real upset was that this was a way for you to promoted your event at the University Of Delaware. You were having a book signing and you were also going to perform. You know Mr.Tyress being a black radio station, its hard enough getting people to advertise on this format and yet when a performer comes to a radio station as a guest and then use the airwaves for personal gain is wrong. Why didn't the college, your record company or your management work out some kind of promotion to invite the people you were lecturing on the air to come to your event. What you did was made your on air time an info commercial. Now I do not expect that from a Black performer to use us. Imagine how I felt that Tyress is going to be performing in our backyard and we didn't even know about it. Nor did our listeners. Maybe you found out that day that it wasn't promoted and you decided to use us rather then support the station that supported you. That's right we were the 1st station in the north east to support you new song.
Also you have the order of what happened on the air wrong. You came on lecturing our listeners, you then asked the DJ if we had any listeners. What kind of question was that if we had any listeners. Then you went right into promoting your big night at the University of Delaware. You received the full air time you deserved. We did not cut off your mike, we did not let the audiences know that the interview was over but you did. You couldn't wait to tweet your words all over and let people believe that you were kicked off because you were talking about liquor store, that was not the reason. You got away with taking advantage of the only remaining independent station in the North East.
Its situations like this that are killing the Black Division of Record Companies. Do you think for one second if a Pop group was appearing somewhere and that Pop station didn't know about it, what would have happened. That's right, the record of that group would have been pulled. In this case how you acted with your lies you got your own record pulled from the station. You came to the radio station hot and you left hot. Oh by the way I understand that you made a big deal at the Double Tree Hotel behind the station. Something about a room, your mouth got in the way again and they threw you out of there too! You need to check yourself. It could be you.

I Don't Read Press Releases

As a publicist/journalist, I see the news business from both sides.

Publicists usually pitch the news stories to journalists. In turn, those journalists have a choice to accept the pitch or just ignore the e-mails and telephone calls altogether. So, I know better when I'm pitching a story to a planning manager or assignment editor.

In a big city like Chicago, I bring my A game before I send an e-mail or call the desk. Usually, an intern or desk assistant is answering the phone and has been trained to keep calls shorter than 2 minutes. They don't want to know about your day or how the weather is outside. Just pitch your story quickly as possible and move to the next media outlet.

If you pitch me a news story, just send me a synopsis of the issue or the bio of your client. That's all I need. When I do the follow up call, I will have my own questions about things you might not have mentioned in the press release. A journalist has a different level of curiosity about the same subject that a publicist thinks of as a business opportunity.

Journalists get paid by their employers and not by your PR clients.

News is a very competitive business. If you want to be IN THE NEWS, start looking at the world the way a journalist does. Publicists should ask themselves: Will people tell their friends about this story? If the answer is no, then go back to the drawing board.

Keep Your Night Job, Anderson

I pride myself on being the nice media blogger. I try to be fair to folks even when I am criticizing them. But there are just some things that I can't give a pass to.

Anderson Cooper is a respected journalist who branched out into the talk genre this week. His self-titled talk show has been on since Monday and I finally caught an episode today.

It wasn't good.

I mean, it really was not good.

I was disappointed.

Anderson is an awesome journalist because he goes to great lengths to get a story. But this whole talk show thing is not his element. He's trying too hard and copying the other New York based, super phony, over produced shows with no focus or purpose. If he tried to create an extension of his journalistic work, this might have worked.

For one thing, Anderson has built his brand with a different audience. He appeals more to the person who gives donations to Haiti relief than somebody who cares about his friendship with Kathy Griffin. One of the biggest problems with TV is that producers think their INSIDE JOKES will be funny to folks in the OUTSIDE WORLD. Nobody cares!!!!!

I hate to give this show an expiration date but I don't see it going past 3 or 4 months.

Today, he conducted an interview with Gerard Depardieu. (No rhyming pun intended) But to talk about somebody pissing on a plane was really corny and so over the top. I felt offended that somebody felt my humor was so sophomoric that I would be glad to watch it.

Anderson should allow somebody else to work in that arena. He's not in the right league to handle pop culture items as a host. I want him in the newsroom where he belongs.

New Faces In Chicago TV

On Monday, Chicago brought in the new TV season with new faces.

For the first time in 25 years, neither a rerun or season premiere of Oprah aired on WLS-TV (ABC7) at 9 a.m. Instead, "Windy City Live" aired and was slated to re-air late at night when the Oprah replay use to come on. But that wasn't the only NEW thing going on.

WMAQ-TV (NBC 5) and WGN-TV introduced Michelle Relerford and Frank Holland to their respective viewers.

Relerford is actually a Chicago native who used to freelance for WFLD-TV (Fox Chicago) and came back to report. She has a pleasant on-air persona and will definitely make an impact at Channel 5.

Holland works the early early shift at WGN as a co-anchor for Erin McElroy. I haven't seen him yet. So, I guess I have to stop this blog.

LOL!

But more new faces are coming to Channel 5 next month after their meteorologist Ginger Zee moves on up to the East Side (of the United States). (She's going to be on Good Morning America)

According to my buddy Larz at Chicagoland Radio and Media, two nice young ladies will fill Ginger's role: Cheryl Scott and Alicia Roman.

I just can't wait until my peeps like Glenn M., Sylvia S., Ivy G., and Nick S. get their chance to be on TV. They deserve on air jobs too.

A PR Company's Nightmare

Michelle Flowers Welch has a reputation to protect.

As the founder and CEO of Flowers Communications Group, she is one of the most powerful Chicagoans in public relations. For 20 years, the company has gained respect in multiple aspects of multicultural PR including: event management, promotions, and even crisis communications. But now, they have to do a little bit of damage control from the inside after shocking accusations of a high ranking employee came to light.

Ignacio Carillo was the VP of the Latino division...until today. After he was arrested and charged with two counts of rape, Mrs. Flowers Welch released a statement indicating that he had been immediately terminated.

But how do you rebound from something like this? PR is a very competitive business. In a city like Chicago, you have 5 publicists for every citizen. (I'm not joking) That's why I took a step back from getting into the business and I started writing this blog instead. :)

Flowers Communications Group has already taken the right steps by moving forward with the best interests of its clients and other publics. (In the purpose of full disclosure, they have published one of my blogs from Huffington Post on their site).

Employees at ALL PR firms must realize that what goes on after work can affect everyone at work in the long run. So, it is important to use the same advice that you give your clients. But rest assured that Mrs. Flowers Welch isn't playing.

Look at how quickly she acted on things.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the alleged victims of the crime. Sexual assault is a very serious matter and we need to stop it. I think that Flowers should partner with a sexual assault victims group on a campaign to show just how serious they are about shunning that kind of conduct.

When Rappers Quit Their Day Job

Soulja Boy and T.I. gambled and lost this week.

Earlier this week, Mr. Boy had rap lyrics that were quite offensive to our men and women in the armed forces. And a few days before that, T.I. thought he could go back to stylin' on folks without the permission of officials from the Federal Bureau of Prisons. All in all, it has definitely been a disappointing week for hip hop fans and publicists alike.

Soulja Boy is a rapper. He's maybe not the best one out there but he has a responsibility to ENTERTAIN and not offend. If he thought he broke a new record for lowest albums sold last year, just wait until the numbers for "Respect My Hustle" come in. (He might as well cover Billy Preston's "Nothing From Nothing Leaves Nothing")

And T.I. just needs a reality check instead of a reality show. I mean, really?

Really? Come on dude? You have been the "victim" of celebrity justice too many times. Maybe if somebody throws the book at him, he will learn his lesson.

I don't even have a workshop to present today. I'm just shaking my head.

The PR Struggle of Black Muslims

Black Muslims in America have always had a unique identity crisis.

For them, Islam is the most accurate choice of religion. They believe that our African ancestors spoke Arabic and followed Islam before coming to America as slaves and becoming Christians. And there is truth to that claim.

Others have accused them of being vulnerable ex-convicts who mostly follow an organization--The Nation of Islam--founded by a New Zealander on the run from the law. (Wallace Fard Muhammad disappeared around 1934 and the organization was taken over by Elijah Muhammad)

Now, the religious group has taken another hit.

Last weekend, Yusuf Bey IV, was sentenced to life in prison for ordering the killing of a journalist who was exposing wrongdoings of his grandfather. In August 2007, Chauncey Bailey was shot to death in broad daylight as he walked to work at the Oakland Post. In addition to Bailey's death, two other people who were allegedly killed that summer as a result of Bey's orders.

I immediately thought of the independent film, "Everyday Black Man"--starring Omari Hardwick. In that film, a Black Muslim charms his way into the lives of a grocery store owner and his daughter. It's not long before Hardwick's character, Malik, becomes one of the most vicious people I've seen on movie screens since The Usual Suspects' Keyser Söze.

And like the character of Malik and many other Black Muslims, there is a dark side to the nicely groomed bean-pie selling brothers. But as a PR consultant and journalist, I want to focus on what the good men who practice the religion can do to avoid being lumped with the bad ones.
First, they must condemn unjust acts like the one that occurred with Mr. Bailey. While Bey expressed remorse about what happened, he still didn't denounce that kind of behavior. From what I've heard from reliable sources, it happens more often than we realize.

In addition to that, the Muslim brothers must learn to resolve disputes in a peaceful, non emotional way. Was it really that serious? Mr. Bailey had a family who loved him and did not deserve to die--especially because of such a dispute.

I hope that Black Muslims take a deeper look into the people representing their flock. If they don't work to pick the bad apples out of the bunch, the reputation of the organization will take a nose dive. And I'm sure that's not what their founder would want--or would it?

The Growth of Online Newsrooms

For PR professionals, media kits have become so 1999.

If you want to get press coverage, you must have an "online newsroom" on your web page. While it seems odd that a PR company would produce its own media before it pitches its clients to the media, that is the way the industry is going now. TV and radio producers are looking for stories that somewhat "half-baked." They want more than just a video press release but a multimedia "rough draft" of the news story they will be producing.

A recent article in PR Daily verifies this claim. But the writer of the article comes more from the HR perspective. It is targeted towards people who want to work for PR companies instead of those companies just pitching themselves to the media.

In-house news is not a new thing for companies but it is a particular function that is expanding rapidly. Since the worlds of PR and journalism appear to be interconnected, it is important to teach college students majoring in those fields how to be skilled in both areas. Blogs have become just as popular, if not more, than traditional newspapers. And the online newsroom will make it easier for a person like me pursuing a story to get the info I need.

Pastor Tims' Mysterious Death

Over the weekend, those who knew or knew of Pastor Zachery Tims were shocked to learn of his passing.

Tims, 42, was found dead in a New York hotel room on Friday.

He was a charismatic minister whose services appeared on Christian television, YouTube, and other outlets. As of this writing, the cause of death had not been determined.

In situations like this, there is a need for an official spokesperson to make sure the right information is given to the public. You might not normally think of public relations in this case, but I do. All we know right now is that his funeral plans have been announced, but no other statements have been made.

Out of respect for his family, I hope that his members and other supporters stay focused on praying for his loved ones to get through this difficult time. It is every easy to engage in gossip but that only complicates the grieving process.

My heart goes out to his ex-wife, his 4 children, congregation, family members, and friends.

Don Lemon's Sour Grapes

There's one organization Don Lemon might not want to join after today's incident in Iowa: Operation PUSH. The CNN anchor says that Republican presidential candidate Michelle Bachmann's husband pushed him into a golf cart or something like that. Maybe Bachmann's husband that P.U.S.H. stood for Push U So Hard. Who knows. But it happened to me before and I feel his pain.

In high school, I got pushed 3 times on different occasions. On one of those occasions, I was attacked by a gang banger who was under the influence (of damn near everything). For the other two, girls pushed me to get to somebody else they didn't like. Yeah, Morgan Park High School wasn't the best place to go back in the late 90s/ early 2000s. But I digress...

It is an embarrassing moment when a reporter becomes a crime victim. All Mr. Lemon did was ask a "respectful question." Yet, life gave him some lemons that tasted more like sour grapes. But he'll find a way to make lemonade out of this situation.

The Ultimate Stereotype

One of the most controversial topics in the African-American community is dating. You see black women on TV all the time talking about not being able to find a good man. For the past 5 years, reality TV producers have created a genre of a black woman in distress looking for Mr. Right in a pool of men secretly chosen by backroom deals with casting directors.

That's why I cringe at tonight's premiere of "The Ultimate Merger" Season 2 with Toccara Jones. Back in 2007, Tiffany (New York) Pollard played the same aforementioned role in VH1's African-American version of "The Bachelorette" [I Love New York]. But if you really know anything about the real values of real black women, you would know that the young ladies on TV are more of an exception than the rule.

Black women that I know have high standards for relationships. However, they don't play the victim role when they can't find a man to meet those standards. They just move on. That's what makes me very afraid of shows like these. It becomes more than entertainment but bad brain food for impressionable high school girls and some college aged women.

Mr. Right isn't always tall, dark, and handsome. Mr. Right might be the dorkiest, chubbiest, and physically most unattractive guy at first. But if you work with him and look beyond his appearance to see his potential, you will find somebody who can change from an ugly duckling to Prince Charming. Unfortunately, shows like these celebrate the tall, muscular but disrespectful jock types and make a mockery of the shy, socially inept, somewhat skinny but mostly respectful guys. And this makes things bad for men everywhere.

Some say that we give TV too much power. I say that we don't give it enough. It is a very powerful medium that is used to create stereotypes and imagery which can affect how people view the world. If all you see is only one kind of person being presented positively, you might judge those who fall outside that mold.

This is just my opinion though. I love Toccara, but I owe it to myself and my IQ to watch something else tonight.

Gospel Legend Delois Barrett Dies at 85

The gospel music community was saddened to learn that Mrs. Delois Barrett Campbell, part of the famed trio The Barrett Sisters, had passed away this afternoon at the age of 85.

The news was broken by Mr. Bob Marovich of the Black Gospel Blog, as well as colleagues of Mrs. Barrett Campbell via social media. One of those people, Mr. Richard Smallwood, has become a trusted source with updates involving his friends in the ministry. Last year, he was one of the first to tweet that Bishop Walter Hawkins had passed away. Even then, he had to verify his identity to some who were skeptical about believing news of death from a website known for so many hoaxes.

It seems as if an official publicist can't be found, people are getting their news from close friends or bloggers like Marovich when something like this happens. A newsroom might not understand the importance of a gospel singer's passing to those who enjoy the artform. So, it can be comforting that social media is becoming a powerful news source to get news to a particular niche market.

Mrs. Barrett Campbell was an active member of Trinity United Church of Christ and lead a song with her sisters on the choir's first CD release, "The Artist", back in 1996. The song, "Jesus Will", was a bluesy update of a song Rev. James Cleveland released in the late 50s/early 60s. And 15 years later, choirs are still ministering that song across the city, nation, and the world.

I enjoyed her music and I plan to pay my respects should any of her services be open to the public. This was a big loss for the gospel community.

Rahm Shows His Temper

Now that Rahm Emanuel has been in office 2 months, he feels free to show us the man he's been rumored to be.

This week, he attended a musical event at Trinity United Church of Christ--which would have been a bad move 2 years ago during the Rev. Wright controversy. But you can tell he's moving past those issues and trying to connect with the politically active members of that church. Unfortunately for the media, there's one journalist who won't be connecting with him soon.

Mary Ann Ahern is a very nice lady. I met her at one of former Mayor Daley's last press conferences last February before his retirement. I dropped a glove and she went to great lengths to give it back to me and share a smile. I have no problems with her or Mayor Emanuel...but the two obviously have problems with one another.

Media Relations Tips:
1) I think Mayor Emanuel should request a different journalist. Ms. Ahern is more than qualified to interview other folks in the political realm. So, they should agree to disagree and move on.

2) If you get a tough question during an interview, just do your best to answer it without showing frustration.

3) Reporters should be forthcoming about questions that will be asked and understanding if interview subjects refuse to answer them. (But that doesn't mean you shouldn't at least try)

Tyler Perry's Shocking Confession

One thing's for sure: Tyler Perry was put on this earth to tell stories.

Okay. That was mean--depending upon how you interpreted it. I could have been talking about his movies and not his ~~semi~~autobiographical accounts in the media. But he knows how to keep his audience gasping in both worlds of fantasy and reality. (Don't you think it's odd that Loretta Devine keeps ending up being Bow Wow's grandmother against her wishes?)

To help sell the new issue of Ebony, Mr. Perry drops another "surprising" secret . I don't want to spoil it like I just did with the Bow Wow/Loretta Devine thingy above. :)

I think the next big secret he will drop is that he's a fan of Aaron McGruder.

Don't put it past him folks. But this is a PR trick that everybody seems to use nowadays when it comes to selling a "transparent" book or a memoir that you supposedly started in 2008 before a life changing event occurred in 2009. (Guess who the two folks I'm talking about are in the comment box below.)

Now, I blog about local media on Chicago Now, the Chicago Tribune's community blog website. My blog, Isaacs On Chicago Media, debuted on June 30 and it's starting to gain momentum.

The Chicago Media blog will be exclusively for our city. By contrast, this blog will continue to cover PR and Media topics from a global perspective. [Eventually, someone will cover me one day if I make it as TV reporter or executive.]

But I've already started off with drama.

Obviously, there was some misinterpretation about how a TV anchor left a particular station. I got caught in the middle, even though I was not the original source of the story. But that's what happens in the media: blame the little guy.

All is well. Apologies have been given and accepted and I'm ready for the next situation.

Pooch Hall's Latest PR Crisis

Did TV star Pooch Hall have a public meltdown Friday night in Chicago?

That's what one of my local media friends told me this afternoon in a very interesting telephone call.

This friend was one of the folks invited to cover "Fashion Loves Music" and according to this person, the meet and greet for the media had some technical difficulties.

Pooch Hall allegedly snubbed the photographers and journalists who were there to cover the event. (This is information that my source gave me. I was not at the event) If this is true, he really goofed up. However, my friend told me why he was mad and his tweets prove it: he was picked up 2 HOURS LATE from the airport. (Wow!)

Usually the most important thing to secure is the HOST of an event. LOL!!!!

But the biggest shocker of the past 36 hours was how the event's publicist, Ariel Rainey, responded to her critics on Twitter.

I think everyone is wrong across the board. Twitter is NOT the place for anyone--especially publicists to handle their disputes. REMEMBER, Tweets are archived in the Library of Congress. So, even after you delete a tweet, you are still on record for writing something you regret. Believe me, it's not something you want to do whether it's job related or just building one's reputation.

The most shocking part of yesterday's melee is that the PUBLICISTS broke their own personal rules. I hope this doesn't happen again. It's a bad look for the profession.

Chris Campbell's Meet & Greet

Chicago native Chris Campbell is an offensive tackle for the Green Bay Packers. He's a talented guy who ended up being apart of a Superbowl winning team in his first full season. But he wants to be just as well known as someone who appreciates his fans. Last Tuesday, I attended a special "Meet and Greet" featuring the man everyone calls "Big Baby".

The event was held at Tantrum, a really nice lounge in Chicago's South Loop. Everyone there had a good vibe and appeared to be enjoying the event. And the publicist for the event, Christi, was inviting and warm with all of the guests. What surprised me the most was how approachable Chris was. I usually think of football players as having big egos, but he was a really nice guy.

He posed for pictures with friends and was respectful of those who were there to cover the event. I was impressed. He's not like the characters from the BET soap opera "The Game". Instead, Chris Campbell is a real person from one of the realest places in the world: Chicago.

(My camera was malfunctioning, but blame me and not the camera. LOL)

Chris Campbell appears to be doing the right things to have a positive image. By doing so, I predict that he'll be around in the NFL for quite some time. He's already got the championship ring to show for it. (Maybe he can come back home and help the Bears win another one.)
But I hope more NFL players try something like this to interact with friends, fans, and supporters.

As they say in the marketing business, it's all about branding.

Morning Joe's PR Woes

MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program is known for its live gaffes--including curse words and temper tantrums shared by the hosts from time to time. But yesterday, one of the most vulgar, offensive things happened when Time Magazine's Mark Halperin called President Obama "a dick." This leads me to believe that there's something ELSE in that coffee they drink to make them so lax with their professionalism.

It seems as if cable TV news stations are going to great lengths for ratings. This was such an obvious PR stunt that it was probably written on the teleprompter. It's sad that we live in a world where TV anchors, analysts, radio hosts, and former pizza executives running for President have to stoop so low to get an audience's attention.

A lot of people feel that Obama gets a free pass, as compared to George W. Bush. I think their critiques were equal in frequency. However, I feel the comments directed towards Obama have been more offensive in nature. That's just my opinion.

Gospel Singer Enhances His Brand

Richard Smallwood represents gospel music royalty. And I can say that both subjectively as a fan and objectively as a journalist. He has won many prestigious awards in his 30-plus year history as a composer, while gaining the respect of those inside and outside the gospel industry. But what catches my eye as a PR/media expert is how he's promoting his new album, "Promises."

This week, Rev. Smallwood posted a link on Facebook to his new website. It looks very good and has a built-in MP3 preview page to sell individual tracks to his fans. In an era where gospel artists tend to be losing money, Rev. Smallwood is looking for ways to engage his audience with social media and local appearances. In fact, he is headed to Chicago in July for an interview and mini-concert at Trinity United Church of Christ. But one of his biggest events this summer will be the 2011 National Association of Black Journalist convention. By creating relationships with journalists, he will expand his "rolodex" of people who will interview him and expose the public to his brand.

My suggestion would be to have a strong story angle. Maybe it could be that this album, "Journey" is expected to land him his first Grammy. (Yup, he's only been Grammy nominated but never awarded one) He could talk more about his social media strategy is helping him win souls for Christ and increase record sales.

I look forward to the release of "Promises" in 3 weeks. It should become a classic album for all to enjoy.

Who Will Save The News?

Save The News is more than just a slogan; It's a website devoted to stopping consolidation in news rooms. The site is run by Free Press, a nonpartisan non-profit agency working towards reform in the media. And the biggest problem the agency has is with camera sharing between news stations. Such camera sharing is done through a "Local News Service", which involves the collaboration of camera feeds and helicopter footage.

For the most part, news stations in our city have saved a lot of money doing this. But this experience sometimes comes with a price. Here's one blooper that happened when somebody forgot to switch cameras during live coverage of Mayor Daley's last day in office. Our NBC affiliate, WMAQ-TV, ended up promoting the WGN-TV station by mistake. :) [At the 0:51 mark]

But I see the bright side of shared news coverage. It has opened up the door for citizen journalists to cover "routine news events" in their own way. Since the mainstream media only has about a minute to devote to a fundraiser, banquet, or charity run, this opens up the door for amateurs to hone their craft. Of course, they will never replace a professionally trained reporter or photographer. However, it does allow for people to post video clips to YouTube and make a business for themselves.

WMAQ-TV Makes Big Changes

Change is in the air at WMAQ-TV--better known as NBC 5 Chicago.

This week, a few new faces joined their team including Stefan Holt as on-air talent and veteran news producer Shannon Hamel as the new assistant news director . Both Stefan and Shannon bring a youthful perspective to a news station that has fallen in the ratings recently. Holt, 24, has received criticism about only having 2 years of TV reporting experience in a market that usually requires at least 5. In addition to that, 38 year old Hamel could have challenges in delegating orders to reporters who are 10 to 15 years her senior.

Right now, there is a need for news that speaks to a younger audience. While most people assume that news is only for old people--guess again. Young people will watch the news if there are topics that relate to them. Fortunately for WMAQ-TV, that creates a market opportunity for them. They have already renamed their writers and producers as "platform" and "content" managers. With the right social media strategy, coupled with a community relations campaign with local universities and colleges, the network will be on its way.

Chicago Trib Remembers Daryl Hawks

It has been only 39 days since NBC 5 sports anchor Daryl Hawks passed away. But just one day without your loved one can seem like an eternity. As I covered in a previous blog, it seemed as if the Chicago media was avoiding the Daryl Hawks story because his initial autopsy results were inconclusive. Fortunately, the Chicago Tribune featured a special Father's Day piece to show how his family is coping with their sudden loss.

Columnist David Haugh sets up the story with a catchy lead. (A lead is an opening sentence or paragraph of a news story that grabs the reader's attention) As I read it, I realized how grief puts you in a nightmare-like state until you realize you can't wake up from it. You look for your loved one, only to realize they aren't around anymore. That can be very difficult for widows like Daryl's wife, Sandy, as well as his three children: Daryl Jr, CJ, and Jasmine. Thankfully, Haugh finds a way to present the article in a comforting fashion. Yes, the nightmare is real but there is hope for a happy ending.

Chris Brown's Twitter Temper

Chris Brown needs more than just a good publicist; He needs a male role model. And I write that as objectively as I can on this blog. He just keeps making foolish mistakes and something's gotta give.

Earlier today, he got into a THREE WAY twitter battle with singer-songwriter Frank Ocean (who was unknown until this week) and rapper Tyler The Creator. After a series of racial slurs and expletives, the rapper finally appeared to calm down and let things be. But his behavior is most troubling to those of us who work in the PR/media field. He appears to be headed down a destructive road and nobody is willing to put a speed bump.

Chris Brown is emotional. And I have a confession to make: I can be emotional too...at times. I'm sure that potential employers reading this blog will go, "Let's throw Zack's resume in the trash because he's spilling his beans." But sometimes it takes one to know one. I realize that Chris is acting out because he's 22 and wanting some clarity for his life. Hell, I'll be 27 next month and I feel the same way.

Methinks he was bullied as a kid. His responses to smart alleck comments are very similar to the mine when I was his age. At that time, I had just finished college and I had quite a "spicy" senior year. Let's just say: I was a little too 'hood for corporate America at the time. I didn't know that you just have to walk away and be diplomatic.

That was until I gained a mentor in the Chicago Defender's Kathy Chaney. She taught me how to keep things professional in public and emotional in private. You don't want the entire world to know which buttons to push to make you vulnerable. Your ability to be professional is what separates you from the person who gets the job and the person who doesn't.

For that, I am truly grateful. But there were men in my family, including my YOUNGER brother David, who showed me that I had anger management issues. I just hope Chris gets the help he needs. He seems like a really good, really talented young man. But without a big brother/uncle figure in his life, he might end up in jail.

I write that with complete seriousness.

Brittney Payton's Local TV Taboo

WGN-TV's Brittney Payton has done something that very few journalists in Chicago would be allowed to do. She has appeared on two of her competitor stations as a talk show guest--on WPWR's "Perspective" program May 8 and more recently WLS-TV's "Windy City Live" on June 17. It seems as if her station manager Marty Wilke is okay with having talent promote their causes on other TV stations. But this raises a bigger question about TV reporter contracts: should reporters appear on other stations for personal reasons?

Deja View?

Until now, reporters from local stations could only appear on our PBS affiliate WTTW for the "Chicago Tonight" program. Since WTTW is not a direct competitor of the major three corporate owned and operated stations, a lot of reporters have gotten double exposure by doing so. Yet, it seems odd when you see a reporter from let's say "Channel 9" on "Channel 2". It is almost like cross promotion could hurt the internal promotions strategy.

I'm sure Brittney had some stringent rules to follow.
1. Don't promote anything about the other station except the show.
2. Get questions or topics approved by general manager before going forward.
3. Don't do this on a regular basis.

I'm sure a lot of reporters want to use their own media knowledge to promote personal agendas and products. We've seen it with Don Lemon of CNN as he hopped from sister station HLN (Headline News Network) to BET for "Mo'Nique" to PBS for "Tavis Smiley". His publicist, Howard Branagan, wants to make sure that he gets the largest exposure possible. (That's the real reason why I was rejected for press availability) But wait...I'm not mad about that. I must prove that I can draw a big audience first. I'm just making the point that it's a fine line between self promotion and confusing your fans about where you really work.

As a viewer, I don't mind seeing reporters on multiple stations; As a future news director, I do.

The Accidental Publicity Stunt

John Baker is a comedian who has a YouTube channel called "Spoken Reasons".
About 9 months ago, he had to speak to the POLICE about the reason for a comedy skit gone horribly wrong. If you don't have time to watch the video, here's what happened in a nutshell:

1) John and his friends begin filming a skit about them breaking into somebody's apartment.

2) More friends--dressed as fake cops-- come through the window with fake guns.

3) A REAL neighbor calls the REAL police who arrive in moments with guns drawn.

4) John explains the situation and everybody has a good laugh.

5) That's only after TV cameras show up.

I don't think John wanted all of this attention, but it did help publicize his YouTube channel.

Very dangerous, but very cool.

Lifestyles of Chicago Anchors

If you want to know how much TV anchors make, just look at their homes.

Yesterday, the business section of Chicago Breaking News reported that WGN anchor Dina Bair is selling her home for $1.25 million dollars. The average person would read a headline like that and say, "I want to be a journalist!" But those kinds of salaries apply to the top 5 TV markets because of the advertising revenue that's generated in such places. If you work in Nutbush, TN, don't think about making more than about 60 K a year as an anchor..if you make that much.

But Ms. Bair's story makes me look deeper into the lifestyle of a big market TV anchor. They are referred to as "local celebrities" by most publicists. And the celebrity status they have allows them to run in some very high social circles. Unfortunately, many folks tend to get into the journalism business for the wrong reason because of these perceived perks.

I'm Your TV Anchor, Not Your Neighbor

If you're an average joe in Chicago, you probably won't see a TV anchor in your neighborhood unless they are doing a story. Even at that, you are likely to see a general assignment reporter. But most of our anchors tend to live in the Northern or Western Suburbs. A few of them live in the South Loop but they try to keep a very low profile.

One reason for keeping a low profile is that they don't have security. In 2008, WLS-TV anchor Cheryl Burton was attacked by a man who was allegedly punching people at random. About 16 years before, she was a victim of a carjacking . That is probably why Ms. Burton's family was angry with my cousin for wanting to speak to her at a function in 2007. (My cousin was a featured soloist; Ms. Burton was the keynote speaker.) They snarled at my cousin but Ms. Burton was very gracious and took time to say hello. And she didn't have to.

TV reporters and anchors have a bottleneck relationship with their viewers. It's the same as celebrities and their fans. While it's possible for millions to see ONE person, it is IMPOSSIBLE for one person to see millions. It just won't ever happen. TV anchors will never be able to meet all their fans, and that's okay.

I say this because I want to be a TV anchor one day. ;)

Flash Mob Media Frenzy

If you're in downtown Chicago and about a dozen black youth start approaching, what do you do? It seems like our local TV stations and newspapers know the answer. Lately, there has been a media frenzy concerning violent "flash mobs"--referring to those who assemble quickly and commit violent crimes. But could this new coverage create a more uncomfortable relationship between young black men and the police?

WHEN THE NEWS BECOMES PROPAGANDA

I try not to discuss race on this blog. I feel that we should look more at human behavior rather than someone's skin color. However, the media of Chicago seems to be trying to link someone's skin color to their behavior. And that is a highly irresponsible way to document history.

That is why I wrote this on Huffington Post. As journalists, we are expected to be unbiased. By the same token, we are also expected to be fair. If we see our colleagues being biased, it is our job to correct them without showing our own biases. It is a tough balancing act but it can be done.

Look at Dawn Turner Trice from the Chicago Tribune. She's one of the few local journalists who covered this topic in such a fair way. In yesterday's paper, she shared the perspectives of good teens likely to be accused of flash mob behavior. Up until then, the media only focused on the stories of those attacked or likely to be attacked. As a result, the public started to link images of black youth to potential violence.

I am issuing a challenge to all Chicago reporters, producers, and editors to provide fair and sensible coverage of this phenomenon. Media frenzies can create hostile environments and lead to innocent people being stereotyped because of what a few people have done.

It seems as if local journalists themselves have become the most dangerous group of people in our city. And they can change that instantly--with a stroke of a pen.

Should Paige Have Been Wiser?

Excuse the horrible pun in my title, but Paige Wiser is the journalist all the other journalists are talking about.

The now FORMER Chicago Sun-Times columnist got fired after faking a review of "Glee Live!" when it came to the city last week. In the already struggling print category of journalism, it is crucial that you give 110% or risk losing your job. Unfortunately, Ms. Paige made a decision that could easily put her on a "Do Not Hire" list. But this incident brings another issue to the forefront: the state of journalistic integrity and ethics.

Andrew Breitbart fabricated the Shirley Sherrod video...yet media outlets still give him the time of day. It truly makes me scratch my head. It's almost like, ethics are relative to whether the person involved has something worthwhile. If it were up to me, Breitbart would be in the same category as Cubs fan Ronnie Woo Woo pictured below. (I apologize to Ronnie Woo Woo for that comparison)

What Ever Happened to Jayson Blair?

In 2003, Jayson Blair resigned from The New York Times after he faking more than just stories. Ironically, he's now a life coach. Since Google came out, it is very hard to find work if potential employers see negative things about you--that happen to be true. In the same vein, it seems as if Paige Wiser might have a tough time explaining herself. Fortunately, she has the knowledge of journalism to be able to work for herself. It's not the end of the world, per se; It's just the end of her career with the Chicago Sun-Times.

Journalists tend to say that it is tough to write on deadline. I completely agree. What might seem like an easy 5 paragraph statement could take sometimes hours to write. People who are true journalists are true perfectionists. In that business, everything that one puts is going to be restated by members of the general public. ("You know, they said on the news that..." "I was reading in the paper today that..")

I just hope that we all can learn from Ms. Wiser and Mr. Blair instead of judging them.

The New Age News Director

If you want to be a great TV news director, chances are that you will be looking at more than just one kind of monitor. Consumers are watching the news on the "little screen" (mobile device) just as much as they do on the big screen. This is why news stations are looking for people who can master the art of good television and good online journalism.

Take Kathy Reynolds for example. She is featured on TV Spy today as the latest news director at WEYI (NBC-Mid Michigan). According to the article, Ms. Reynolds was hired because she was "untraditional" given her background in sports, weather, and investigative reporter. She was recently an assistant news director at WAOW in Wausau, WI, which put the icing on the cake for her job credentials.

I'm sure that Ms. Reynolds will use her experience as a reporter to help coach other reporters to give their best performances. But I wonder if this could be the beginning of a new trend in hiring for TV news rooms. Do you think that news directors might have to brush up on their web knowledge or risk losing their jobs?

Can Bloggers Sway Public Opinion?

Mo'Kelly loves the truth. And sometimes he goes to great lengths to expose truth about those who are not being forthcoming about it. On his blog, Mr. O'Kelly has covered topics involving sororities like Alpha Kappa Alpha, as well as religious denominations like the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Now, he has become the go-to guy for the Bishop Eddie Long scandal that just ended with a settlement. With that being noted, it seems as if bloggers are becoming just as powerful as newspaper columnists when it comes to swaying public opinion.

For the past 20 years, Mo'Kelly has worked in the entertainment industry. He has worked in production, public relations, and other capacities. So, when he tells you he knows celebrities--he's not lying. But sometimes his knowledge of how celebrities behave behind closed doors has an effect on his writing. That's not necessarily a bad thing, however. He could be trying to use what people are hiding to open the discussion about transparency.

Yet, it brings to the forefront the question of: Who decides how transparent a public figure should be-- the public figures themselves or those in the media?

Of course, each respective group would want to be the deciding factor in how much truth is dispersed to the public. But that could go both ways for either party. If the media exposes too much of a person's business, then the public might feel overwhelmed. But if the celebrity or public figure doesn't share enough information, it seems as if that person is hiding something.

That leads me to the main topic of this blog:

Do you feel that bloggers have too much sway on public opinion? Celebrities seem to be more offended by what's written on blogs nowadays than what's written on an official news website. Look at Andrew Breitbart's role in the Anthony Weiner scandal. (I am not comparing Mo'Kelly to a conservative blogger who scrambles video, but talking about blogger influence in general)

WGCI Moves to XM Radio

For years, Chicago radio station 107.5 FM WGCI has dominated the airways for its popular blend of urban music and talk programs. Now, the station can be heard on XM Radio station 163. It will replace South Asian "Bollywood and Beyond," showing that radio industry is highly volatile. Formats can change at a moments notice due to the fact that on-demand programming is what a lot of consumers want.

The only radio genre that stays relevant is news. You can play recorded music all you want but you will eventually have to turn on the radio to stay informed about current events. This is why it can be hard for even the big name stations like WGCI to compete with the good ole' iPod. Hopefully, the personalities on WGCI will take this opportunity to enhance their individual brand identity.

Nina Chantele is already one of the hardest working female radio personalities in the city. She works for WGCI, KISS-FM, as well as the television show "Windy City Live." With her bubbly personality as a major selling point, there is no telling how far she can go. She could become a contributor for The Wendy Williams Show. You never know...

This could be the start of something big...

McDonald's PR-Fect Campaign

All marketing majors know about brand positioning. It's about how you make a person, product, or service stand out in the marketplace. And the marketing team at McDonald's must realize that even if consumers don't eat their food, they can still interact with their brand. Lately, the company has used this technique of indirect engagement to get people talking about the Golden Arches in a whole new way.

If you haven't tried it by now, McDonald's has a new Frozen Strawberry Lemonade. The concoction blends the sweet flavor of strawberries with the tart nature of lemonade. (I haven't tried it yet but I heard that it's pretty good) To help promote this product, the fast food giant created a competition called "The Perfect Pair." From now until next Monday June 13, you can vote for your favorite couple. I found out about this contest via Facebook. One of my elementary school classmates, Jamilah Lemieux, is in the competition with her boyfriend David. In fact, as of this writing, they are in first place.

You are free to vote for whomever you choose, but you know who I voted for. :)

Chicago TV Makeovers | WMAQ-TV

NBC 5 Chicago needs a makeover. There's no better way to put it. In the nation's third largest TV market, you can't afford to be a mediocre owned and operated station for NBC. But bringing what residents call "Channel 5" back to its glory days will take some effort. After some lineup shifts, lead-in problems and technical difficulties, viewers have found themselves picking OTHER numbers between 2 and 32. (That's the numerical range of our major news stations.)

CHOOSING THE RIGHT TALENT

In corporate America, change happens from the top-down. This is why NBC 5 boss Larry Wert is at risk for losing his job, according to Robert Feder. ( By the way, Feder got his scoop from Crain's Chicago Business). But it's not always an easy task to choose reporters who will bring big numbers. Diversity becomes more of a liability than an asset if people are chosen based on quotas instead of qualifications.

Take Christian Eric Farr for example. He's a great journalist but not a good fit for WMAQ. And I write this with the utmost respect for him. Given that he is used to doing long form packages for his previous station, WTTW, I don't think he's in his comfort zone. It's like he can't find a specialty as a general assignment reporter. In TV news, it's okay to be a jack of all trades but you have to eventually become a master of some.

He was hired after the station lost two African-American male anchors due to retirement. Warner Saunders and Art Norman had a community reputation. But today's media marketplace is not explicitly race driven. You have to be a journalist who happens to be of color rather than the converse. Christian needs to be brand himself...at another station. Maybe he could go work at his father-in-law Robert Jordan's station (WGN) as an evening anchor.

If Christian leaves, then the new guy Stefan Holt--who is arriving next week--must find his niche. Personally, I feel that he would be a good crime reporter. Stefan Holt comes from another crime ridden city like West Palm Beach. So, he should be able to find good leads.

WRITE BETTER, REHEARSE BETTER

One thing that is hurting NBC 5 Chicago's team is the spike in verbal gaffes on air. The reporters and anchors tend to be messing up a lot. That can make a viewer quickly turn the channel. I would suggest that the team just ad-lib more if reading the script or teleprompter is too much for them.Meteorologist Ginger Zee was stumbling with the weather last Saturday. At times, I wondered if she was making it up as she went along. "Yeah, I think it's gonna be 80. No, wait...it's gonna be 79. Whoops." But all jokes aside, I think the teleprompters were malfunctioning. And that is why reporters need to rehearse better and write better. You won't depend on a teleprompter if you have really prepared your story. That doesn't just go for Ginger but it applies to anyone working in the business. Never take the patience of your viewers for granted.

CREATE A STRONG ANCHOR TEAM

Allison Rosati and Rob Stafford aren't working. Maybe the station could pair Allison Rosati with Alex Perez or Jeff Goldblatt. On the flipside, Rob could be paired with Marion Brooks or Zoraida Sambolin. I know that their agents won't go for that but it's worth trying on a fill-in basis. Without a strong anchor pairing, the viewers will "drift away".

Unsung Journalist | John L. Dorman

Meet John L. Dorman.

He's 6 foot 3, loves politics and pop culture, and he's become a really good friend of mine. But what makes him the most interesting is that he won't give up his dream of being a journalist.

Three years ago, John was 24 years old and had just received a Master's in Journalism from the prestigious Columbia University in New York. It seemed like he would be the best thing since sliced bread fresh out the oven to newspaper and magazine editors. But the changing tides of the journalism industry pushed him further from his dream and closer to the shore of discouragement. The mild mannered kid from Charlottesville, Virginia wondered what to do with his life.

Since that time, John realized that so many of his fellow journalists are in the same boat. People aren't reading newspapers or watching TV that much anymore. The media consumer is just grabbing news and information from their mobile devices--in very small dosages. Folks are into their iPods, cell phone conversations, or just doing some many things at once that they can't focus on one thing. Sometimes, it seems as if there will be no more free news sites in the next 5 years. But there's always a way to grab an audience. Too bad those skills aren't taught in journalism schools as much as writing and adherence to AP (Associated Press) style.

Back to John...

John has a normal name, so he has to work a little hard to make himself stand out. Living in a city like New York, I'm sure he can easily be confused with "John the Doorman" at some of the better hotels. This is why he is trying to reinvent himself using social media. And that's where I come in with my PR/Image tips.

Personal Branding Tips:
• Do a blog-- John has a lot to say. He's a well-read, smart journalist. If he can't get his portfolio out there, then he needs to create his own buzz online. I'm not just saying this because I'm his friend but the brotha is SMART. He always backs up his opinions with sound research and even when we disagree, I respect his hustle.

He could easily mix pop culture items (usually found on Mediatakeout, TMZ, and Bossip) and bring an intellectual flair that is usually found on Politico or The Root.

• Get Involved In The Community-- John has to find a cause that will make him stand out. If he's into charitable work, then he must create relationships with people in that area. I've learned that the best way for a journalist to improve his or her storytelling skills is by MEETING NEW PEOPLE. You can only say so much about the same person before they get boring.

• Find Another Hobby- One of my biggest problems during job interviews is talking about what makes me interesting. Job interviewers DO NOT want to hear that you like doing news reports in your spare time. That's not fun; That's just weird. Maybe he can take up cooking, jogging, martial arts, or speed dating to have something interesting to say about himself.

But he's my boy!!!!

Each entry will give a quick synopsis of the major stories in media and public relations.

SULLY LANDS A JOB AT CBS NEWS

Two years ago, Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger became a hero when he successfully landed U.S. Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River. Over 150 lives were saved and he became a media phenomenon.

This month, he joins the team at CBS News as an on-air aviation expert--according to Huffington Post.

ANTHONY WEINER DEFENDS HIS NAME (in more ways than one)

Congressman Anthony Weiner (D-NY) is getting a little tired of the subtle jokes about his last name. According to Frances Martel at Mediaite, he somewhat jokingly rebutted to NY1 anchor Errol Lewis (above left) recapping the story of his Twitter troubles as the "long and short of it." [Okay, people. Let's keep things professional in the newsroom. LOL!]

DERRICK YOUNG'S GRIDLOCK ON THE ROAD TO FAME

Derrick Young, the recently hired traffic reporter at WBBM-TV, hasn't really been getting any coverage on media blogs. He probably doesn't care--since only media geeks like me tend to read media blogs. Most people who WATCH the news don't wanna read news about people who give the news. But it's rather ironic that WBBM-TV hasn't been promoting his talents.

He did stop by one of the 3 radio stations affiliated with CBS--Fresh 105.9 FM--to talk about his first week on the job. But other than that, he's not really "taking off" like he was supposed to.

There has been some speculation on Chicago media blogs and forums that the station just wanted to pay someone for cheaper. Other folks I talked to said that Mr. Young's physical appearance is what got him the job. I slightly disagree with both theories. The guy has a good camera presence. It could be possible that some union restrictions could be in place to keep him from outshining his co-anchors.

Whatever the case may be, his $8,333 dollar a month salary should not go to waste. If he's going to help people get to work more safely, then we need to find clips or see tweets from him.

My First Talk Show Taping

The best way to critique something is to experience it for yourself. So, I headed down to ABC7 Studios in Chicago to attend a live taping of "Windy City Live". Overall, the show has potential to become a viable replacement for the Oprah show. But it is going to take some time to win over local viewers who got accustomed to one style of programming. That's why it was so important for me to see the show in person.

Three weeks ago, I made reservations for my Mom, sister, and family friend. And time just flew by. We were told to arrive between 7:30 and 8:15 in the morning to be screened by security and handle other matters. So, our day started around 5:30 in the morning to make sure that we looked "camera ready." The hardest part was finding cheap parking downtown. But after a 7 block walk, Mom and I made it to the studio after dropping off our sister and friend.

At about 8:25 a.m, one of the producers started talking to my sister, Carucha, about appearing on the show during the fashion segment. Basically, she was just going to ask the stylist about which color was in for the summer season. I thought this was a good way to get the audience involved. (And no, I'm not being biased because they picked my sister)

At 8:45, we were ushered into the studio and given a pep talk about how to applaud. If you want the secret to talk show applause, you'll have to attend a taping yourself. My lips are sealed.

But the set is much smaller than it appears on TV. If they sat us any closer, those of us in the audience would have been on stage!!!

From 9 a.m. to 9:56 a.m, we enjoyed a pretty good taping. There were some good parts and some okay parts. The okay parts included: Roe Conn's segment. We were falling asleep in the audience. I'm sorry. He was funny the first few minutes but the end was painful. However, Nina Chantele (pictured above with my sister and Mom) had a really good first performance. I look forward to seeing her in the future.

My favorite part was seeing my sister in this segment at around the 4 min mark. I thought the idea of "white" being the summer color was a little generic. I've seen a lot of teal and turquoise this year. But then again, I'm a media critic and not a fashion expert.

Overall, we had a great experience at ABC 7 Chicago. But the show needs some better guests. We have far too many talented Chicagoans (comedians, singers, dancers) for them to do an entire show with experts and contributors. Hopefully, the show will get better. I'm just surprised that they couldn't get any Chicago Bulls players. Even WTTW can find former players from the Chicago Bears!

If you get selected to attend a taping, here are some things to know:
1) Be energetic-- It's hard to be enthusiastic during the slow parts of a show. But your energy could be what saves a segment. It's okay to chuckle at a corny joke. Just don't laugh.
2) Dress appropriately--The show needs to institute a dress code. If you are going to be on TV, you shouldn't have on T-shirts, tank tops, or shorts. You want to look your best in case somebody sees on TV.
3) Don't expect giveaways- We did receive Season 3 of True Blood on DVD, but it wasn't as good as the 2,000 dollar mattress they gave away last week. But free gifts aren't a given when you are dealing with a brand new TV show. Just be happy you got a reservation and take your happy self home. LOL!

In due time, "Windy City Live" could easily become "Ryan & Val". But they might need some help from Val's charming grandmother, Nezelle "Mother Dear" Bradshaw.

Do We Need Younger News Talent?

My blog is not just about Chicago media. I tend to visit sites like TVSpy.com to get leads about what's going on in public relations and media worldwide. One story that caught my attention was WDIO-TV anchor Dennis Anderson in Duluth, Minnesota, signing off after 50 years in the business. My hat goes off to Mr. Anderson for staying at it so long. But then I got to thinking: just how long is too long to be on TV?

Can The "Silver Circle" Stay Unbroken?

NATAS (National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences) is a major television union with a local chapter in this city. Every year, they award journalists with 25 plus years of service with a "Silver Circle" award. And our city has quite a few people who belong to this exclusive club: WBBM-TV's Dorothy Tucker, Harry Porterfield, Walter Jacobson and Bill Kurtis; WLS-TV's Linda Yu, Theresa Gutierrez, Jerry Taft, Frank Mathie; WFLD-TV's Robin Robinson; WGN-TV's Tom Skilling, Merri Dee, Robert Jordan, Muriel Clair, Steve Sanders, and many others.

You don't have to be a math genius to know Chicago has a lot of veterans. And I applaud them for that. But in light of Oprah stepping down after 25 years, it seems like there is a need for younger journalists. Unfortunately, the demand exceeds the supply--which creates a shortage.

One of the big problems in the Chicago TV news market is that young talent is overlooked. Most of the hip reporters are on WGN-TV or WFLD-TV. But WMAQ-TV is getting ready to tap in to the youth market with the hire of Stefan Holt. Yet, it seems like young people are "overlooked" because they might not be considered a target market to begin with.

But at age 83, Mr. Harry Porterfield might not be working in TV too much longer. He may go the route of Mr. Anderson by stepping down after 50 years in the next 18 months.

If I were a news director, I would try to bring some new talent in to struggling stations. One station, WFLD-TV, would benefit from Chicago native Rodney Dunigan. He is an education reporter for NewsChannel5 in Nashville and has produced some solid stories. He would help as a lead story reporter with local affairs.

Rodney could be positioned as the go-to guy for school affairs. WFLD could design a special "Rodney's Blackboard" segment to open every Tuesday night broadcast (notwithstanding breaking news). He could tell stories about ordinary teachers and students dealing with the effects of budget cuts or security problems in our schools. In turn, WFLD would be able to regain its reputation for having top notch investigative reports during the days of departed reporters Lilia Chacon and Mark Saxenmyer.

At WMAQ-TV, I would hire Demetria McClenton--another Chicago native. She worked at WFLD-TV as a production assistant, but now reports for WTVY in Dothan, Alabama. Demetria has a good presence on camera and would work as a good fill-in anchor with Stefan Holt.

At WGN-TV, Owen Lei (a former Chicago resident) would make a good fit. Owen is now a reporter for KING5-TV in Seattle, Washington. He has covered deadly shootings, tornadoes, and other tragic events.

Owen would be able to get the story to viewers quickly and effectively. I would suggest his co-worker Shomari Stone but I don't think reporters should jump in the middle of fights. LOL!

WLS-TV has the diversity business down pat, so I won't suggest any reporters for that station. But if you are an aspiring reporter, you have to be willing to get in where you fit in. So, continue to market your skills and talents and someone who will value them. But the first person to value your skills has to be you.

Windy City Live Premieres

For the first time in 27 years, Chicagoans turned to ABC7Chicago (WLS-TV) and did not see "The Oprah Winfrey Show." The Queen of Talk signed off yesterday after a 25 year run in syndication, making way for a new program called: Windy City Live!

Windy City Live! is more "Regis & Kelly" than it is "Oprah". It is a Chicago talk show featuring cooking segments, live music, and interviews with some of our city's most influential people (including Mayor Rahm Emanuel who stopped by for the first show).

Today's show wasn't perfect but it was a step in the right direction. The 9 a.m. slot in our time zone is definitely up for grabs now. Other stations in the city, like WCIU-TV, have tried to capitalize on the Oprah viewer looking for alternatives by airing Dr. Phil in that slot. But WLS-TV has a history of appealing to viewers seeking diversity in local programming. And you can't find a duo more diverse but surprisingly compatible as Ryan and Valerie.

Good parts:
• Mayor Emanuel's interview: Yes, he made a misstep with the Guantanamo Bay reference (when he didn't have any water to drink) but he was funny at times and business like when Valerie and Ryan would ask questions that he didn't want to field.

I liked the heritage lesson concerning his family and how he is involved with minority teens from Chicago's public high schools such as Simeon. But he did throw the show's timing off by going out into the audience and shaking hands like he was running for Church Pastor. The election is over, Brother Rahm. LOL!!!

• Joshua's Troop: It was a risky decision to make a teenage gospel choir one of the first musical guests for the show. But the song choice ("Everybody Clap Your Hands") was very good. [It was vague title, because that's how you can get away with performing a religious song without offending any particular faiths or folks who don't believe in any faith at all.] They even got the mayor and the co-hosts leaning and rocking right along with them.

Awkward parts:
• Billy Dec- One of the show's contributors is restaurateur Billy Dec, who had on his "Sunday Best" or should I say "Thursday Worst". I understand that he's a laid back guy but "when in Rome, do as the Romans do." That doesn't mean you have to BE Roman, but just get in where you fit in. Wearing a baseball cap to a show where the hosts are in business attire really makes it look like you don't value the work ethic of Channel 7.

You're a good guy, Billy but get it together--quickly.

• The "Surprise Guest"- It's hard to top the surprise guests that Oprah had last week. But if you are gonna pull a Hollywood B or C-lister, then don't call it a surprise. (No offense to Johnny Galecki, but I really didn't know who he was). It's not a put down, it's just an observation that I'm sure a lot of other viewers made. If it's not somebody who is a power player in Chicago sports, music, theatre or politics--don't make it out to be a surprise.

A good "surprise" guest would be Kelsey Grammer (who is in town filming a new show for STARZ) or Jennifer Hudson.

Bad parts

• The Slideshow- Okay, Billy. We might as well stay on you for a minute. But this criticism is all in love. This is not The Wendy Williams show. If you don't have video footage, there's no need to show pictures from your cell phone camera. While he did have footage of Virgin Airlines mogul Sir Richard Branson announcing a new contest--which was the good part of Billy's report-- it just wasn't enough to satisfy the needs of some viewers.

• Emanuel's "Water"-Gate- As a former TV intern, I know that you have to know your guest better than you know yourself. A lot of times, I was using MY OWN MONEY to buy snacks for the cast of our reenactment as well as birthday gifts for one of our subjects. Nobody told me to do it, but it's part of being a great intern and future production assistant.

Anytime THE CO-HOST has to run off set to get the mayor some water, you might as well move the show to that person's apartment. It's the same difference. It's not the end of the world but it's not something that should be tolerated again.

• The Sound Mixing- Valerie was YELLING over the crowd and the loud music. It was almost like a CTA train was passing by in the studio. "COMING UP....WE WILL HAVE AN INTERVIEW WITH RAAAAAAHHHMMMM EMMAAAAANUEELLLL!!"

Try this instead: play the sound under her and cue the audience to applaud AFTER she has finished providing the tease.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

The show has potential. And it could become syndicated. In fact, it should become syndicated. But that won't happen until they build a bigger set and find better guests. However, if Oprah could start small and grow big...with patience, they will do the same.

Who Is The Next Oprah?

Yes, I'm joining the media bandwagon in celebrating Oprah's 25 years on free television. Now, if you want to see The Queen of Talk, you have to pay for a subscription to OWN. And a lot of folks thought she would be giving away subscriptions at her last show--which aired this morning. But there were no giveaways, no screaming fans, no surprise guests. Instead, she dedicated her last hour to the folks who made her who she was.

As she walked out the studio, it seemed as if a new era of television was being ushered in. There really isn't a need for a talk show because the world of entertainment is now On-Demand. Back in 1986, if you wanted to see a specific celebrity--you had to keep up with appointment television. If you weren't in front of the TV at that time or able to record the program, you missed it. Now, folks can go on YouTube or rewind their DVR to get the latest news on their favorite celebrities. In fact, I'm surprised that Oprah taped more of her shows than airing them live. But I think she began to realize how the market place has changed.

To be honest...THERE IS NO NEXT OPRAH.

Sure, we have local personalities like Monique Caradine Kitchens, Garrard McClendon, and Janet Davies. But Oprah capitalized on a unique opportunity that could have only worked back in 1986. America was looking for a female alternative to Phil Donahue, but a more intimate version of Sally Jessy Raphael. So, Ms. Winfrey decided to take ownership of her brand and market it like nobody's business.

In many ways, the 1980s marked the beginning of global branding. Whether you liked former President Ronald Reagan or not, he took advantage of the U.S. doing business overseas in a big way. While poor folks like myself didn't get anything out the deal immediately, we ended up benefiting in the long run. This is how Michael Jordan, Michael Jackson, and Oprah grew to such astronomical stardom.

For many, the idea of highly talented people of color becoming international superstars was integral in improving America's reputation. Just 20 years before, our nation was mired in a gritty Civil Rights movement. The images of blacks being sprayed with hoses, bitten by dogs and beaten with clubs was contrasted with Bill Cosby and Phylicia Rashad playing a successful married couple in New York.

25 years later, I look at Ms. Winfrey's success with mixed feelings. While I feel she did not cover the topics dear to the African-American community, I understand where she was coming from. You see, she actually did a good thing by staying away from negative programming concerning the inner-city. Oprah never celebrated victims, but always highlighted those who used their pain as a stimulus for victory.

Today, I take off my critical cap and say: "I salute you, Oprah Winfrey. There will never be another you, but there will always be someone like you who does things that can't be emulated."

Until your next platform is created, I'll stay tuned.

The Sister Act of Puppetry

Kozi and Kyra Kyles don't just have cool names; They have a cool idea.

The Chicago sisters have developed a web show called "HR The Series." As Oprah turns off her studio lights, the door is now open for new local talent to come in and shine. And you better believe that these young women are gonna take advantage of this "transfer of power."

According to the official "HR The Series" website, the show is a cross between "Sesame Street" (given the puppets involved) and "X Files" (given the sci-fi angle). The idea came from younger sister Kozi (pictured left) after she noticed former co-workers "vanishing" from her office. In this age of work place sitcoms like "The Office", there is a need for humor that helps people to deal with some annoying things (and people) at the job. Plus, when you have puppets doing all the work--you eliminate a lot of payroll and legal obligations. :)

Big sister Kyra (pictured right) is a respected TV and print journalist in the city, as well as the President of the local chapter for NABJ (National Association of Black Journalists). So, the two ladies already have a HUGE advantage over folks who barely have a "pot or a window" (if you are familiar with that expression).

My proposed marketing strategy for The Kyles Sisters would be to target an audience that can relate.

For one, human resources professors would appreciate this kind of show. For undergrad and grad, human resources management was unofficial minor for me. I took a lot of those classes as electives and really enjoyed looking at how work places operate. This would be a great way to start class discussions and get students involved. In addition to that, the sisters could schedule a live performance for some classes. This would give them a chance to meet prospective viewers face to face.

In addition to that, they need to contact the Society of Human Resources Management or SHRM ("Sherm"). They could also schedule performances at different conferences or company events. But the show shouldn't just be limited to those with a focus on HR. There should also be a marketing effort made towards the science-fiction community.

The show looks like it is going to be a fun one.

Life After Oprah For Publicists

Oprah Winfrey isn't just a talk show host; She is a brand. The Oprah brand has become all about lifestyle and setting new trends. This is why everyone wants to get her golden stamp of approval.

For years, publicists fought to get their clients a spot on Oprah. It was the ultimate publicity goal for anyone who wanted to become a household name. And rightfully so, given the number of careers that have been launched and books sold after Oprah gave her endorsement.

In two days, she leaves regular syndication and whether you like her or not-- Oprah's departure is having a ripple effect on various industries including PR. So, what should a publicist do to get his or her client the best media coverage? I have a few ideas...

* Reality Show Cameos

Some folks have already begun using this idea. If you watch old episodes of "Run's House" or even current episodes of "Real Housewives of Atlanta", you will see people from various industries making cameo appearances. While it won't be the same as doing an interview as Oprah, it will show your clients in real situations rather than regurgitating boring talking points. Once you've seen one interview, you've seen them all.

* Do More Events, Less TV

Face the music: People don't watch that much TV anymore. If you want to be famous, you have to be hands-on with your fans. Get a list of all the community festivals (with reasonable crowd control) and shake some hands and kiss some babies. No, you're not running for office but you are making sure that people know who you are.

* Spend More Money In Other Channels

This somewhat piggybacks off the "do more this and less TV" point above.

You might need to pursue partnerships. Firms like Davidoff Communications in Chicago have tried that to create "synergy". Synergy goes by the concept of two heads being better than one. So, if you are promoting a book that focuses on a specific cause--then partner with that cause. You could have a Maya Angelou poetry book about womanhood promoted as a gift to participants in a charity walk. Whatever you choose, just try to integrate your idea with someone else's campaign. It becomes a win-win situation for everyone involved.

Joakim Noah's Damage Control

Joakim Noah is feeling loss in more ways than one. His team lost a crucial game and he lost his cool.

He was caught using a different kind of "F word" and is likely to be fined a lot of money for it.

In today's politically correct society, you have to be careful in professional situations. There's no way to police what people think or say in the privacy of their homes. But if you do something publicly, you have to be willing to handle the consequences.

I feel that Brother Noah should learn how to ignore hecklers and choose his words carefully. It's the only way to truly "win" during difficult times. But he definitely should not do a public service announcement. It wouldn't be sincere.

Chicago TV Makeovers | "Chicago Tonight"

It's time for a new series on this blog called "Chicago TV Makeovers".

I'm not just a journalist; I'm also a viewer and some of the shows on local TV could be a little bit better if you ask me.

CANDIDATE 1: WTTW's "Chicago Tonight"

Two years ago, I was an intern at WTTW for the Peter Lisagor award-winning documentary From DuSable To Obama: Chicago's Black Metropolis. (Kudos to my producers Barbara "BA" Allen and Dan Andries, as well as executive producer Jerry Liwanig). But during my time there, I had a chance to see how the station's flagship news program, "Chicago Tonight" is produced. [The intercom system gets flooded with pages right before the show begins. It can drive you mad at times. LOL!]

But "Chicago Tonight" hasn't changed much in my lifetime--and that's how long it's been on the air. Since my birth year of 1984, the show has gained the respect of viewers and journalists alike for its in depth analysis of the day's stories. But the show is OUTDATED. It is written like a radio show, and as a result, functions like one. Sometimes the correspondents, like recently promoted Ash-har Qurashi will cut in the middle of a report to introduce a soundbite. Usually, a reporter gets all of his/her soundbites out the way during the "package", or news story, then they will give a recap to the anchor or host. Instead, it becomes a constant recap which can easily lose the viewer.

Suggestion 1: Analyze the sound bites...Don't repeat them!

A lot of times Mr. Quraishi, Ms. Brackett, or Mr. Arruza tend to tell the viewers what they just heard. What would be better is to take a deeper look at why certain words were said. If the mayor supports parking meters, then find information about why he feels that way beyond what was explicitly stated. That would be much better than saying, "Yeah, like the mayor just said, he supports parking meters and people aren't happy about that."

Suggestion 2: Bring More Newsmakers On And Less Pundits

If I want to know why Rahm Emanuel did something, then I want to hear it from HIM and not local "experts" guessing about it. Sure, I did just say that analysis is needed. But analysis is best supplemented with first-hand accounts rather than speculation. In addition to that, the Chicago News Cooperative could extend its partnership with Chicago Tonight by influencing news makers to accept a booking as a guest on the program. If a writer interviews someone, they could work with the assignment desk manager to get that person on the program even if via the phone or Skype.

Suggestion 3: Add More Stories

A trademark of "Chicago Tonight" is the long form, 60 minutes style package. While most news stories are about 2 minutes, "Chicago Tonight" features pieces that clock in near 8 minutes at times. Instead, "Chicago Tonight" needs more local news coverage outside of just politics.
There needs to be a focus on crime reporting, public health, and education-- on a nightly basis. Maybe producers like Paris Schutz or Nick Shields could create short 2 minute news briefs with voice overs about daily developments in those areas. Sure, it would seem like a daunting task, but with the help of some interns doing the research...it is possible.

Suggestion 4: Create A Friday Night Talk Show

With Oprah leaving town, there is a need for live studio events in the city. "Chicago Tonight" is taped in one of the smaller studios--Studio B. The pledge shows are taped in Studio C (located in the same cluster). But I think Studio D would be a good place for a taping of the revamped Friday Night version of "Chicago Tonight".

The problem with choosing Studio D is that it is normally booked for another program, "Soundstage". But the location of Studio D, near the western entrance of the station, would make it easier to screen guests and check them in. Plus, it would create more opportunities for the station to promote its positive image to guests. When that happens, people will be more likely to give a donation.

The new Friday Night show could promote social causes in the city or profile local talent including actors, authors, and musicians.

No Major Coverage For Daryl Hawks

Daryl Hawks was remembered privately without much mention from his own station, WMAQ-TV.

Just 8 days after his tragic passing, the 38 year old sportscaster was laid to rest in his native Buffalo, NY. And while the local station, WIVB, had some coverage--it was just a news brief.

Mind you, I'm not criticizing WMAQ-TV; I'm making an observation.

Plus, there is a Chicago memorial planned soon.

My heartfelt condolences remain extended to his wife, Sandy, three children, siblings, parents and colleagues.

Windy City Live Seeks Niche

Oprah Winfrey is a tough act to follow.

For the past 28 years, she has hosted a show that functioned as a ratings link between morning news and daytime soap operas for Chicago's ABC affiliate, WLS-TV. What started as a local program, "AM Chicago", evolved into the iconic, syndicated "Oprah Winfrey Show" (abbreviated over the years as just "Oprah"). But in just 5 days, all of that will come to an end when the "Queen of Talk" steps down off her throne.

For the past 18 months, WLS-TV has developed a replacement program which was originally titled "Morning Rush." After they realized that "Windy City Live" sounds a little better, that is the name they stuck with.

The show is hosted by a group of young, popular Chicago TV anchors. One of them--Ryan Chiaverini--came straight from the WLS-TV sports department. The other, a popular traffic reporter from WGN named Valerie Warner. Both are in the mid 30s, have a great personality, and beat out dozens of applicants to get the job.

To make sure things move smoothly when the show premieres next Thursday, there was a test show done this week. Check out a clip from it:

Sure, it's rough around the edges for right now. In addition to that, so many people are comparing it to Oprah's show--even though it is like comparing apples to oranges. Plus, this is not 1986. There really isn't a need for a talk show superstar anymore as much as there is a desire for "entertaining news."

Hopefully, the show will find a way to create packages (long form news stories) about stories that don't get much coverage. The best option would be to get the in-studio audience as well as viewers at home more involved in the show.

CBS2 Chicago Hires Traffic Reporter

As we say in the 'hood, "Let's keep it 100" (keep it real).

It's tough to find out who got the job you got turned down for. Usually, companies just send you the "it's not you, it's us" letter and send you off into the sunset. But this job was the CBS 2 Traffic Reporter gig that was open to to the public. So, we found out who the winner was a couple days ago.

Derrick Young, a 42 year old educational coach from Chicago's South Side won the big prize. He beat out 700 entrants, as well as a group of 67 other semi-finalists (which included this blogger) to land a 3 month contract that most reporters could only dream for.

In fact, the idea of having a reporter job open to folks in the station's viewing area was not well received by folks in the beginning. Many people hid behind internet pseudonyms to express their disdain about skipping over journalism majors and seasoned reporters. But station president Bruno Cohen had been doing that since January. He decided that the only way to reach the common man is to choose a common man to present the news.

I'll be honest. Derrick had a great audition tape but I wasn't sure he would make the semi-finals.

And I'm not hating.

I was concerned that he and I both would not appeal to certain viewers or executives at CBS. But whenever you do an audition tape, you just have to be confident and do your best.

Maybe you are an aspiring TV reporter reading this blog and feeling discouraged. You studied for years to be on TV and outsiders like Derrick and I seem to be butting the line. But don't be so quick to doubt us or doubt yourself. The TV industry is about quickly learning skills to supplement the skills you learned in school. Sure, your journalism profs might teach you how to read a teleprompter or write copy but they can't teach you everything. When you are reporting, your biggest concern is about the things going on behind the scenes. You must learn how to be "attractive" (inside and out).

Instead of being jealous of Derrick, I'm learning to be happy for him. He showed that he had something you can't learn in j school. For me, I've learned a valuable lesson from all this. It's not easy to see somebody else get the job but it's not hard either. I know that I'm good enough for some employer--even if that employer is myself.

If you are REALLY passionate about working in TV, you'll keep doing it no matter how many rejection letters you get. You'll do it until THEY are the ones you will be rejecting job offers from. In the meantime, check out Derrick and cheer him on.

Don Lemon's Big Secret Part 2

In his latest interview with HLN's Joy Behar, CNN anchor Don Lemon says that he was "born this way" or something to that effect.

The whole idea about attraction to a specific gender being genetically linked has always been a hot button issue for debate. So, as Mr. Lemon starts his book tour, his PR team knows exactly what to do to get things rolling.

For one thing, I learned during my only celebrity interview (with Tyrese) that celebs are given a "script" or "talking points" to stick with during their media availability. Every journalist knows that-- especially a journalist like Lemon who is now on the other end of the microphone. The only way to get a juicy soundbite is to rephrase a question. I used that tactic and it worked.

For example, if you are interviewing a celeb and the publicist says that they can ONLY talk about the event they are spokesperson for-- then try to tie their personal life to the event.

"So, what makes this event more special than the other ones you've been a part of?"
" What do you personally hope to gain from this event?"
" You have been dealing with some challenges lately. How does this event help you get your mind off things?"

If I had the chance to interview Lemon (which I can't because of political reasons) I would definitely try to go deeper into why he's choosing to be so public now. Lemon is known for being very private, so a lot of people I know in the history are raising their eyebrow at the timing of his revelation.

However, I still feel that he's a good person and a good journalist. I just look at this from the eye of a PR expert and journalist (and yes you can be both!!!).

Don Lemon's Big Secret

Usually, I don't believe anything posted on Twitter unless it is from a journalist.

Tonight, a respected journalist BROKE NEWS about himself.

CNN's Don Lemon reported this via his Twitter page, just one hour after his Sunday broadcast.

Some might suspect it is a publicity tool--specifically designed to help sell his new book, Transparent, which hits stores next month.

Others might feel that the secret would have been leaked anyway. He probably already gave promotional copies to book critics and felt the secret would have been let out. However, Mr. Lemon does have some conservative viewers in the African-American community who might not watch his program because of his revelation. That is one of the concerns he discussed with New York Times writer Bill Carter.

Now, I realize why CNN and Lemon's book publishers were leery about him revealing something so personal. It could change how he is perceived reporting the news. While we expect journalists to expose the secrets of others, we never expect them to reveal things about themselves. I guess it is part of the old school methodology for newsroom decorum. But maybe the old school is falling apart and needs some renovation.

Chicago Sports Anchor Dies

Shocking and sad news from Atlanta, GA...

NBC 5 Chicago sports anchor Daryl Hawks was found unresponsive in a hotel room and later pronounced dead at the age of 38.

Many commenters on blogs immediately mentioned the eerie parallel between him and one of his predecessors, Darrian Chapman (pictured right), another NBC 5 Chicago sports anchor who suddenly died in 2002 at the age of 37.

Both men had such engaging personalities and really gained the respect of viewers. Both men left behind families and had a love for Chicago sports.

It is truly a sad day for the city and sports fan everywhere.

May Daryl Hawks rest in peace.

Common Versus The Conservatives

Folks in the G.O.P. are fuming about the R.A.P. of Chicago's native son Common- a famous rapper and actor.

He was invited to perform tonight at the White House for a poetry slam. But many conservatives- like Sean Hannity- believe that he shouldn't be there.

They feel that his lyrics are offensive. Yet, it is interesting that the same conservatives have failed to protest wrong doing by members of their own party. While Common is not a saint, he's not a monster either.

In fact, the Obamas like hip hop more than one might think. One of my close friends is a former employee of Mrs. Obama (from her days as an executive in Chicago's health care industry). That friend says that the Obamas admitted to enjoying a little music from rapper Ludacris (another Chicago native) from time to time but didn't condone all of his lyrics.

Robert Feder Slams Chicago TV Anchors

One thing's for sure: there's never a dull moment in Chicago TV news.

Yesterday, I wrote about allegations of nepotism concerning Stefan Holt. (His dad used to work in Chicago and now he's getting an anchoring gig)

Now, media columnist Robert Feder is stirring up the pot again with a harsh critique of Chicago TV anchors appearing in a farewell ad for outgoing mayor Richard M. Daley. What makes the situation more sketchy is that the sponsor of the ad, Walter E. Smithe furniture company, admitted to not asking one of the networks--CBS2Chicago (WBBM TV)-- for permission. Yet, I stand amazed at how these reporters are being lambasted by their colleagues at rival stations [who remove their tweets before I can link them to this post]. But I've observed other reporters doing the same thing.

If You Point One Finger...

About 2 years ago, I covered a prayer vigil for a journalist who was detained overseas. At the vigil, a prominent (married) civil rights leader was asked by one of the female anchors in attendance if they could meet up for dinner. While I was shocked at the off-camera ethics violation that this anchor committed, I realized that TV people are sometimes friends with the folks they cover.

Is this ethical? It depends upon whom you ask. Some viewers don't see a problem with journalists having relationships with the people they report on. In fact, I know plenty of journalists who have their friends part of the "beat" (regular contacts for news tips from a certain neighborhood or industry).

I'm just not sure if Mr. Feder was being critical or trying to get website hits.

That's just my opinion. And yes, I know some of the journalists who were featured in the ad. But I'm not telling who they are. As Mr. Feder would put it: "That's not ethical." ;)

Stefan Holt's Homecoming

TV reporter Stefan Holt (pictured right) is headed from West Palm Beach, Florida back to the cooler climate of Chicago. But the "reception" he is getting in the comments section of some media blogs is a bit chillier than the weather.

Stefan's father, Lester, is a former Chicago anchor for CBS affiliate WBBM-TV. Now, the elder Holt is an anchor at NBC News in New York. But the younger Holt is headed back to the Windy City to fill a reporter position at our local NBC affiliate, WMAQ--according to Chicago Tribune columnist Phil Rosenthal.

If you look at how broadcast journalism students work tirelessly to find jobs, you can understand why some are unhappy with Stefan's fortune. But if you also look closely at the backgrounds of some major names in TV news, you'll see a pattern of folks who don't always have to follow the job description.

Poppy Harlow at CNN worked for NY1 News and Forbes Online News before landing her current gig. Her colleague, Ali Velshi, doesn't even have a journalism or business degree. [He majored in religion.]

Chicago's own Gaynor Hall (my elementary school "colleague") spent only 2 years in Macon, Georgia (No. 121 out of 217 TV markets) before returning to our No. 3 market.

But instead of being jealous of Stefan, I think people need to realize that it's not just about who you know but about how you market yourself. He may have done a really good job during his interview and showed that he knew Chicago's television market well.

The good part of this is that TV news is leaning towards younger talent. That gives me hope as I prepare my resume tape. But I do want to pay my dues. It might take a little longer for me to have a homecoming, but when I do...It's gonna be "cool" in the right way. ;)

TV Ad Biz Becoming A Seller's Market

Advertising companies are feeling the pinch--even with a strengthening economy. According to the latest article by Brian Steinberg, prices of television ads could go up 9% over the next year. Surprisingly, the number of viewers is down for most stations. Of course, you have mainstays like CBS with its popular shows like "60 Minutes", "CSI" and "The Mentalist". But there aren't that many other stations who have such strong programs.

This time 10 years ago, the biggest threat was TiVo. Now, one of the biggest challenges is to get folks to use their televisions in the first place.

The one thing that is saving television is PROFESSIONAL SPORTS.

People do not buy 60 inch screen televisions to watch cartoons. Instead, they are looking to enjoy sporting events with friends and family.

Therefore, media buyers for advertising firms are most likely to be locking down on rates for big sporting events such as the NBA Finals, World Series, and various All-Star events.

Hopefully, the return will be worth the investment.

YouTube's Comedy Entrepreneurs

Right now, the best job market for creative young people is online video production.
If you put up the right video on YouTube, you can make big bucks.

Take 23 year old Todd Jones II for example. I've profiled this young man before but he's really making moves now.

He just reached 1 million views for a spoof he made of Bruno Mars' popular "Lazy Song"--but he's not the only one doing video spoofs.

Troy Pindell, a former football player--also in his 20s--has been making money off spoofs and comedy skits on his channel. [TPindell3]

And they have helped me to rethink my career path. Don't get me wrong: I'm still working on my resume tape to become a TV reporter or producer. But instead of just posting a tape for news directors to look at, maybe I need to beef up my stories and start my own news channel.

As of now, my YouTube channel has individual stories that stand apart. While the underlying theme of my channel is youth violence and community development, I need to find a way to make it run like a news operation. But that can be a challenging task when you don't have the press credentials or official status as a member of the media.

Nevertheless, I am going to start branding myself TODAY to do more than look for a job. I am going to CREATE A JOB.

Here's some tips for you:

1) Get a Tax-ID number. It's the way to receive payment for YouTube videos or a blog like this one. You must register with the government to make income off the advertising that will be placed on your videos.

2) Optimize your keywords. The more keywords the better. You want to be putting up videos that are HIGHLY relevant. As you can see, Todd and Troy put up videos based on whatever the highest searched videos are in the entertainment category. So, latch on to that market and build a following of your own.

3) Practice, practice, practice. You are not going to be making the best videos on your first try. You will have to be critiqued by family, friends, and your viewers. Don't be afraid of criticism and always work to perfect your craft.

This is a story you won't easily see on the news. And that's why folks like Mr. Sims and I love doing citizen journalism. We find the real cool stories that TV producers find online and try to take credit for finding first.

Not so fast. It's the average joes with the low budget camera who can find the most interesting people to interview.

But that's not to say that TV news is obsolete. It's just that there's this disconnect between amateur and professional journalists. We must work together in order to provide fresh and original content to our audiences. Professional organizations have the brand name and built in recognition, while amateurs have the organic creativity and curiosity to find interesting people.

Oh...if only the two groups could work together....

Obviously, David Letterman wasn't too happy about Trump's recent behavior.

In turn, Donald Trump canceled his scheduled May 18 appearance on the show.

As much as I love David Letterman, I really think this "beef" is a ratings ploy. Why else would you talk to Dr. Phil (whom you also had a beef with back in the day) to discuss something that wasn't relevant to his show appearance?

Stop Hating on People

I don't normally do editorials on this blog, but this needs to be said.

The Center For Disease Control needs to inform the public about an outbreak going on across our country. It's called "hateritis". Symptoms of hateritis include:

devaluing the accomplishments of others, focusing on negative things instead of positive things, emphasizing the irrelevant and using arrogance to cover up low self esteem .- Zack Isaacs, 2011

This is what has been happening in the news the past 2 weeks.

Let's bring the afflicted patients into the evaluation room.

PATIENT 1: Donald Trump

Donald Trump definitely didn't vote for President Obama. For the past 2 or 3 weeks, he has been stirring up a false controversy. Whether it's the assumption that Obama was born in Kenya or got poor grades in school, Trump has proven that he was an avid reader of the New York Times when Jayson Blair still worked there.

Prescription: Mr. Trump should take a chill pill and three doses of reality before he alienates the fan base of his reality show. Then, he must come clean about his real intentions of running for office.

PATIENT 2: Dr. Cornel West

I am so surprised to see Dr. West in the examining room. But his case of hateritis is not as severe. He did make great arguments about how the government has ignored some of the needs of the poor. But I feel that he should not have called President Obama a mascot for Wall Street oligarchs. We've got to move on from victim politics and work with what we have.

Prescription: Apologize for what you said and lead by example rather than trying to make an example out of our nation's leadership.

PATIENT 3: Any person jealous of the new AFLAC Duck

Dan McKeague won the AFLAC spokes duck competition and folks on Facebook were hating like there was a competition for that instead. Some of them would have won.

Prescription: Work on your AFLAC voice and stop pretending like you were really into doing animal voices before the competition began. You wanted the fame, not the responsibility.

I'll be honest. I've been rejected for THREE competitions in the past month. I auditioned for AFLAC on April 1, the CBS show "Big Brother" on April 9, and the CBS 2 Chicago traffic tryouts on April 16.

And I'm 0 for 3.

It's not the greatest feeling in the world, but I'm learning that every offer is not an opportunity. People tend to confuse opportunities for offers and offers for opportunities. Offers come a dime a dozen, but opportunities are rare and unique.

I might get rejected 15 more times before I get my breakthrough. But guess what? When I do make it, it's gonna be something that is custom made for me.

I truly believe that God has my dream job waiting on me. But I can't find it if I sit at home hating on people.

Be happy for people, so they will be happy for you when you make it.

Guru's Nephew Upholds His Legacy

Justin Nicholas Elam-Ruff has a big name to live up to...in more ways than one.

He is the nephew of the late Keith Elam, who was better known as rapper GURU. GURU passed away on April 19, 2010 after a battle with cancer. And one year later, the family is still feeling the loss but finding positive ways to celebrate GURU's legacy.

Sad Timing of New Malcolm X Book

For a man I've never met, Malcolm X is my true hero.

I love just about everything he stood for, as well as the transformation that Brother Malcolm underwent from his days as a criminal to his final days on Earth.

Today, another biography- Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention (2011) by Manning Marable [Penguin Books USA] - will be released. Unfortunately, Mr. Marable passed away just three days ago, after working on this biography for almost 20 years.

Don Lemon Becomes The Story

Don Lemon, who turned 45 last week, has a big year ahead of him.

In June, he will release his autobiography entitled Transparent. The book is expected to feature an in depth look at his struggles to become successful in the television journalism business. (It's no cake walk people)

But in the mean time, he just premiered a special report about the 20th anniversary of the Rodney King beatings:

But what should be Don Lemon's promotional strategy for his book?

1) Be truthful but not vengeful when it comes to discussing his days at Chicago's NBC affiliate, WMAQ-TV. There are rumors that he is going to expose some things that were going on--including that he rebelled against management for assigning him "black stories". If that was the case, he should leave that in the past and just be general when discussing the TV industry. One thing I've learned from my past TV internship at a certain PBS station in the city-- you don't wanna burn bridges. You never know who might be able to hire you.

2) Promote his triumphs and not his defeats.
It's really easy to play the victim. But what will make his story stand out is that he is a VICTOR over past circumstances. If his book is gonna be about him feeling sorry for himself, I won't be buying it. I'm sorry.

3) Develop a thick skin.
Don Lemon's a nice guy, but he can be sensitive. But I have the same problem. It's because we both are human. No one LIKES criticism (especially the negative kind) but it helps make us better people. It just depends on how we respond to the constructive criticism, as well as the destructive kind.

4) Avoid questions about really personal matters
Be transparent, but not completely vulnerable. What Don does in the privacy of his home has nothing to do with me unless people are being harmed. It's okay to talk about challenges in the categorical sense. But going too deep into one's personal life can affect how viewers perceive that person.

Nadin Khoury, the Survivor

Nadin Khoury has learned that "vengeance is mine, saith the Lord."

He's the 13 year old young man who endured a bully attack (caught on tape), in which he was dragged through snow, hung on a tree and a metal fence and lived to tell about it.

He was featured on "The View" this week and received a surprise that made his pain worth it all. :)

MY OWN BULLYING STORY

I was more verbally bullied in high school. I was called "sissy", "faggot", "ghey", "lame", "nerd" because I was a studious kid. Members of the football team even threw an orange at my head. But the worst part happened on November 11, 1999. I was punched and beaten by a neighborhood gang leader--who happened to be high at the time. And what made it worse, I was in my ROTC uniform, surrounded by my fellow cadets and they laughed while walking away.

I was alone..with no one to help me. At that time, I even felt that God had left me. The guy called his friends over and they robbed me of the only dollar I had in my pocket. My family had a cold response and didn't even seem concerned.

But tables turn. God has allowed me to enjoy things my bullies will NEVER enjoy. I've "walked among kings but have not lost the common touch." (words the poem "If").
He's even allowed one of those ROTC cadets who abandoned me to serve me chicken as a waiter at KFC. And I've never rejoiced in folks getting what they deserve. I've always felt sorry for them.
For all I know, that gang leader might not even be alive anymore. But I still feel bad for him.

You see, you get out of life what you put into life. So, if you sow bad seeds--you will reap a bad harvest.

Hopefully, Bro. Nadin will get some martial arts training. He'll need it for his future career as a Marine, so he protect OUR NATION from bullies overseas. :)

He appears to be a really good kid and I wish him the best.

The Grio Retells Black History

The Grio is MSNBC's African-American themed web venture, based on the name of an African storyteller known as a griot (pronounced "gree-oh").

And what better way to tell the history of African-Americans than by focusing on the history being made, rather than the same old folks we always hear about.

For the month of February, 100 History Makers In The Making were selected by The Grio's editorial staff to bring light to African-American leaders--some unsung, while others relatively well known.

During this month, I am going to profile a few honorees per blog. CHECK IT OUT:

1. John Rice,
founder of Management Leadership for Tomorrow program

You may have seen him on "Black In America 2" with Soledad O'Brien or maybe never heard of him before, but he's a big deal. And success runs in the family. His sister, Susan Rice, is the U.S. permanent representative to the United Nations.

Mr. Rice has managed at Disney and the NBA, but there's more to him than fun and games. He wants to increase minority representation at high level corporate positions, rather than just create more entertainers. And for that, my hat goes off to him.

2. Courtnay Tyus,
Executive Director of Development & Institutional Advancement
Philadelphia's Charter High School For Architecture and Design

Ms. Tyus creates programs to boost minority involvement in architecture. She also works hard to help students get internship experience and career placement.

She also volunteers for the National MS society and owns a jewelry company. Wow!

She is truly someone we all should know. Hats off to Courtnay!

3. Myron Rolle,
NFL Player & Rhodes Scholar

Brother Myron just went ahead and broke the stereotype about "dumb athletes" when he became a Rhodes Scholar in 2008. He used that scholarship to gain a M.S. in Medical Anthropology from Oxford in 2009.

He founded the Myron Rolle Foundation to promote health to disadvantaged youth.

Shaq Conducts Boston Pops

The Boston Pops--virtually unheard of by non music majors/ anti-geeks under the age of 55-- had NBA superstar Shaquille O'Neal come by and conduct the orchestra.

This PR tactic is great because it introduces classical music to those people I mentioned above.

Garrard McClendon Headed to PBS

It's official.

Former CLTV talk show host Dr. Garrard McClendon (that's right, he worked hard for his PhD) is moving to Public Broadcasting Service.

But he's got a little PR problem already: fans don't know WHICH PBS station he's going to.
I'm assuming that it's WYCC (affiliated with the city colleges) because WTTW--our major PBS affiliate in Chicago--is known by its call letters or just Channel 11. On the other hand, WYCC (Channel 20 for most folks) is thought of more as the main station for PBS.

McClendon is assembling a street team to promote his new program. However, he has the marketing challenge of getting more folks to watch PBS.

Here are some tips that he could use:

Target Waiting Areas
Depending upon which time his show airs, he could possibly target doctors' offices, emergency rooms, or waiting areas in corporate America. They could just play a sample DVD of his programming to get people accustomed to his brand.

Set Up A Fan Page and Twitter Account for the show
He needs to have a separate page devoted to getting people in Chicago market (which extends into Wisconsin, Indiana, and Michigan) excited about his show.

Create A Text Message Alert Tree
Just like a phone tree (where one person calls a group of people on his or her list), McClendon needs a text message tree to send weekly alerts for his program. Of course, this will be an opt-in program, but it will be helpful in reminding people when his program airs.

What Attracts Oprah Producers

It's the ultimate trophy of a publicist--getting your client on "Oprah."

If you can get your client on Oprah, you will have solved the Rubix Cube of Public Relations. And as the show wraps up the last 5 months of its farewell season, it is going to be very hard to be featured as a guest on stage or in the audience.

Yet, there is still hope for that person who wants their last minute claim at fame.

1. Do Something Jaw-Dropping

You will have no problem pitching an Oprah show producer if you can drop his or her jaw. In fact, upcoming show topics include, "Are You Cheating On Your Husband?" and "Is Someone You Know An Animal Hoarder?"

Oprah's producer have a way of making tabloid stories appear more refined. This is because the show has established a certain aura of the years. Maybe this is because professional psychologists are usually part of the panel and the audience is more refined. (Word on the street is that any disruptive audience member is removed at once.)

2. Do Something Unusually Charitable
If you think dropping a dollar in the Salvation Army box is gonna get you on "Oprah", guess again. It's not always about giving money, but giving the gift of life.

Let's say you take in a family who lost their home to a fire, and then you help pay hospital bills of one of those family members. However, in the process of doing so, you default on your mortgage. Well, Oprah's producers might be interested in hearing your story.

3. Don't Try To Be On Oprah

Oprah has been rumored to have an ego that is larger than her block long studio. And that's not always a bad thing. But she wants to be "the first" person to tell America about something cool that is going on. So, take your story elsewhere and make a big splash. She will eventually beat a path to your doorstep. (Figuratively and literally speaking)

4. Consider Her Audience

Oprah show topics are geared towards what middle class stay at home moms care about. That's why her producers have ignored my pleas to get her to talk about violence in urban communities. Unless Lisa Ling feels like coming to 39th and Cottage Grove in Chicago, we are more likely to hear about genocide in Rwanda rather than homicide in South Central.

It doesn't make sense, but it's the way of the world.

But maybe I can get on you there. (Don't hold your breath)
And it's not because of my PR skills. It's just that you deserve better.

Aretha Franklin's Shocking Diagnosis

Today, we learned that The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, has cancer.

The most interesting thing about today's coverage is how journalists cited The National Enquirer as the original source for the story, but did so with caution.

Ms. Franklin's friends and family have confirmed her cancer but there has been no official word from her publicist.

Until then, we shall hope for the best.

The Need For INTEGRATION in TV News

Show me a failing TV station and I will show you one that is not INTEGRATED.

As a graduate student, I studied Integrated Marketing Communications. And people would always ask me what did that mean. Simply put, integrated marketing communications deals with the coordination (organization) and correlation (relatedness) of communication.

TV stations can't run well if the departments work independently of one another.

In my opinion, the PUBLIC AFFAIRS or COMMUNITY RELATIONS department is just as important--if not more important than--the NEWS ROOM.

Think about it: if you can't feel the pulse of what's important to viewers, then they won't watch your station. In order to do that, the news department must link up with the promotions, marketing, and public affairs departments to create a strategy.

1. Define The Target Audience
You'd be surprised at how many TV stations say that they are doing this, but they are not. Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as a TV station that EVERYONE watches because everyone is not into the same news. Some stations do better because they successfully appeal to more than one demographic segment. They can do this by working in concert with the marketing and promotions departments. In addition to that, the public affairs/community relations department is needed to maintain those relationships.

2. Look Deeper Into The Ratings
One way to use marketing is by tracking the lead-in program ratings for the evening news.
Nielsen has gotten pretty sophisticated with how it tracks viewers. So, marketing departments must communicate with public affairs/community relations, as well as the news room to see what stories the viewers will be interested in.

One station might look at Facebook statuses to see issues that are affecting viewers. Remember, people are already putting all their business online anyway. Take that "volunteered" information and use it to your advantage.

If you see viewers (on your Facebook fan page) are young adults who watch talent shows, then you might want to do stories about other interests they may have. Some of them might be college students who need job ideas or single parents looking to keep their kids out of trouble. Take the data you have acquired and use it to make better decisions.

3. Cross-Train for Coordination
This is a controversial idea in human resources. The most obvious reason for this is that it is too time consuming. Plus, the unionization of television industry makes it impossible for managers to give a writer's job to a cameraman. (I'm sure AFTRA, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, would agree with this)

But you want to train departments to interact with each other better. Maybe a news director can observe a control room operator to see how that person views operations, and vice versa. A marketing director could talk to a managing editor to see how they can help one another.

If I understand how my job affects someone else's, I will probably do a better job to make both of us look good.
